Patou Pour Home- Lucky Day

Patou Pour Homme is legendary "power" frag that was discontinued awhile back. It had a lot of hardcore fans.

Trading PMs with an Angeleno Basenoter and he tells me about a weird little convenience store in the plaza of an office complex that he's seen selling Patou Pour Homme. It's two miles from me so I shot out the door.

Picked it up 90ml for $46. TPC sells 15ml for $141. Good way to end what was otherwise a crummy day.

I'm a little concerned the years may have taken a toll on it, but for $46 I get to have one of the scents I've always wanted to try.

It's nice. Potent. It is a bit old mannish-- but like, really rich old mannish.

I've always been curious about sniffing this one...but I'm not really into 80s power scents and there is no way I'd pay $200-300 for any scent.

Out of curiosity, did the store have any other interesting discontinued scents?

Had an odd collection of older stuff, but this was the only one that stood out to me. I have a better than average knowledge of frags. Had a Versace L'Homme that might be pre-reformulation (but some say the new stuff is just as good). The Patou Pour Homme is a little like L'Homme to me. Has some pepper notes up top. Overall, it has a very finely blended perfume kind of vibe for something that is a EdT. I can where it would have had quite a following given its price point back then.

I'm not pissed for $46, but I fear this juice is kind of played out. On first application, I can see the appeal and artistry, but it fades pretty fast. It doesn't have the ooopmph one would expect from an ultimate 80s power frag. Proper conditions for long term frag storage not a priority for this little store I fear. I don't think I'd buy anything there again. He had an old Kouros (which probably is none the worse for ANY conditions).

I'm not a "speculator" or much of a trader. I have no intent of marking this up to sell it. It disturbs me a bit that there are some people who would buy this and put it out there for $300 and it's a bit compromised by time I think.

I had read about this legend and had a goal of trying it, but not for the $$$ people tend to jack it up. The Basenoters are pounding me with PMs.

Yeah, there a couple discontinued scents I want to try but the markups on them are insane.

One ebay listing I saw of a particular scent had a gift set of a drugstore frag from the 60s that probably went for a couple bucks marked up to almost $200. You'd have to be insane to go for it at that price and odds are the scent has weakened or spoiled at this point.

There was even one site I saw where a guy was selling a bunch of perfume where 80-90% of the bottle had evaporated for quite high prices.

Was that the only bottle? Would you be willing to purchase and ship a bottle to another member (being fully-reimbursed, of course)?

I'm quite sure it was the only one. I've been peppered with similar requests from a bunch of Basenoters. A crowd of people are going to descend on this little tiny store like locusts.

It's tough to get there since he's only open weekdays 9-6.

I'm also bummed honestly that it's a bit off.

I have a small amount of the stuff. I think its a nice scent, the list of components is impressive, but I've never thought it was worth the huge price I've seen a few bottles sell for. I have to wonder why Jean Patou d/c'd it, the only assumption being that it wasn't profitable. That also makes me wonder if the demand is based more on myth than reality.

That I can tell from reading a bit about it, and now testing it, is that it was very elegantly crafted for a men's "designer" EdT. More like a men's perfume really. Bear in mind it probably originally sold for around $50-$60 for 100ml or so. As such, it was accessible to more people than a GIT or BdP. The men that got really hooked on it really liked it. It smells rich and distinctive.

It's built up a sort of mystique around itself out of scarcity. It is good, but I sure wouldn't pay some of the outrageous markups people seem to ask. There are many contemporary scents that are as good or better. I think Versace L'Homme is similar and maybe even better.

The fact that Patou discontinued it just tells me it stopped selling well. It has a bit of an 80s vibe to it. Some of those scents survived (Antaeu, BdP, GIT) and some didn't. The simple fact is that a lot of scents that us more "mature" men really like don't get enough play from younger men. They likely spend far more on such frivolities so for the most part and drive the market place more. This one really does have a bit of a mature vibe to it, nice as it is. No twenty-two year old would slap this on with fancy jeans to head out to a club. They're loading up on Diesel, Dior Homme, A*Men, Aqua di Gio, M7, Musc Ravageur....

Insane find!

I've had a couple of these and most were probably like yours, off a little. One bottle I had that was in pristine condition almost smelled like a completely different frag, light and powdery on top, citrus and florals. Wow! Even the burned out bottles are superior to 70% of what's out there imo.
