Pasteur´s: way overpriced!

I went to Pasteur´s last week and all their shaving products were way overpriced (they were selling the tabac refill for US$ 18,00 and a merkur 38C for US$ 45,00)!!!

As I was in the USA for just a few days I hadn´t the time to order on-line, so I´ve just bought L´occitane Cade and AOS soaps (in their respective stores) and didn´t buy anything on pasteurs. :cursing:

I would love to visit there some day. Maybe Pasteur's is about the only place in the US where Tabac is on the shelf in a real live brick and mortar store. I have seen photos of their shelves. In their defense, I think it costs them something to keep the wide variety of wet shaving products from around the world on their shelves. If I bought something from there, I'd justify paying a bit extra for the luxury of finding what I wanted and taking it back home with me.

Plus they are a brick and mortar store trying to survive in New York City. It's worth a premium to support that kind of place in my opinion, but I especially feel that way about Cambridge Chemists :001_smile

+1; I didn't mind paying a premium for a few items because I could smell them for myself first.

The customer service, on the other hand, is bad. That's unfortunate.

I visited Pastuer's and Cambridge Chemist's on the same day. I found price comparisons between the two to vary. One had a particular product cheaper than the other an vice versa.

Colonial Drug in Cambridge, MA (Harvard Square) carries Tabac products, along with a number of other goodies.... Sounds like they sell Tabac soap for a little cheaper than Pasteurs too (I think they mark it at $14)

Mertz in Chicago has Tabac on the shelves

On second thought... this isn't Pasteur's (which is way too crowded to get pictures), but you get the idea of being around so much shaving stuff.

It's worth it to touch, smell, and be there with this

Oops! Those pictures are from Cambridge Chemists. Pasteur's across the street is way to packed to take anything but closeups. But you get the idea.

I noticed a difference in some items between the two Pasteur's stores as well. Generally, the Murray Hill store on 34th had items for less than the Upper East Side store on Lexington, if there was a difference at all.

Some things are overpriced and some are competitive. Certainly, it is one of the very few places in town where you can see it and touch it before you buy it. I stop in whenever I am near Penn Station and have a few extra minutes to kill.

Jim was standing behind Steve in those pictures of Cambridge Chemists. He was avoiding the camera like there was a warrant out him or something :001_tongu

Unfortunately, we only took group shots, and, as you can probably guess from my avatar, the camera rebelled on them all. ;)

There are certain advantages to showing up late. No photos!:biggrin1:

If you gents haven't figured it out, I loathe having my photo taken.

I think it depends on the product. If I remember correctly, their prices for Speick, Trumper, Taylor, DR Harris, and Cyril Salter are close to online pricing, while all the Proraso products were more expensive at Pasteur than just about anywhere else. Also, I think individual razor blade packages are about the same as buying single packs online.
