GIVEAWAY! Participation PIF - Rembrandt's Shaving Masterpiece

@spacemonkey42 , I agree with your assessment. Three shaves is about where I draw the line with this blade when face shaving. I used the first blade for head shaving, and that took too great a toll on the blade's longevity. I am now only using the Rembrandt for face shaves, and it is very good to me for 3 solid shaves.

Rembrandt Blade #1 Shave #3
Razor - 40s Super Speed
Blade - Rembrandt Stainless(3)
Brush - Omega 10777
Soap - Arko
A/S - Alum, Thayers Facial Toner, Pinaud Clubman
Rating - 10/10 BBS

This shave was a bit unusual; there was quite a bit of tugging on the WTG pass, but the XTG and ATG passes were as smooth as any I’ve ever had. Overall this was a very enjoyable shave it would be nice if they were all this easy.

After healing from my last venture and before the cold hit here, I tried:
Gillette Rocket HD and RR Wunderbar
Soap: SV
Brush: Muhle synth
AS : Lucky Tiger, because I saw Tanuki used it.
I took 2 strokes w the Gillette Rocket....felt rough. So I quit and loaded the blade into RR Wunderbar (it was right there and that one holds blades very stiff) unlike the rocket that felt like a string in a banjo.
2+ pass shave; this time NO cuts, no drama, no burning. A close shave..... better than I expected.
Cheers and enjoy the end of the weekend.

Blade 1 Shave 5 - looking for the blade's end point. Too soon?

Hot rag, lather with a Dutch soap. Gave it time to hydrate.
24+ hour stubble. Bedtime shave. Sticking with vintage razors.

> ASR Silver Star, yeah I can see the gold plate. It clearly says Silver Star on the cap.
> Rembrandt-Super (5)
> De Vergulde Hand Scheerstaaf, thanks @Guido75 !
> Black walnut stubby/Omega knot, turned it in the driveway

Aftercare:
> alum rinsed with witch hazel
> Col. Ichabod Conk Bay Rum, strong and sweet

@helicopter put up test results that encouraged me to scrutinize the shave. This Rembrandt is still a smooth shaver for me at shave 5. With the Star (similar to a Tech), I worked harder to get the close shave I wanted. Fair amount of buffing. But no irritation, no alum sting.

Listening to Rebecca Kilgore / Lars Erstrand (if you are around @Beto Salatini ). Swing and ballads.

Is it swell time?
De Vergulde Hand Scheerstaaf, thanks @Guido75 !
Thanks for the tag John, but in all honesty I am not sure if I actually deserve credits for this. Unless of course you used part of the tub I send to Adam. I think you got the stick itself from other Dutch friends :001_smile. Either way, it is a great soap and the whole set up you got going there is awesome too with that Star razor. And Vergulde Hand together with Rembrandt is of course also a great match! Rembrandt certainly had Vergulde Hands whenhe made his paintings!

Cheers,

Guido

Rembrandt Blade #2
Well the printing on the blade is a little better than the first one.
I used Razorock Santa Maria del Fiore soap and made a WTG/XTG/ATG shave. Rinsing and re-lathering in between.
After the last pass (ATG) I rinsed and could still feel stubble. Hmmm. Out of curiosity, I loaded up a new Gillette Silver Blue blade in the '41 Ranger Tech, re-lathered again and did another ATG pass. The rinse was stubble free.
There was a difference between the blade today and the first one. The first blade did a better job. Maybe the machining back then wasn't as consistent?
If they were still made today, I wouldn't continue to buy them. Just me. Your results may be different.

Results: Rembrandt-7.0
GSB for the clean-up-9.5

Rembrandt- Blade 1, Shave 1

The setup:
Pre-shave: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Exfoliating Cleanser/Cremo Coconut Mango Shave Cream
Razor: Gillette Black Handle SuperSpeed
Brush: Vulfix Boar/Badger Grosvenor
Soap: Provence Sante Verlaine

This is a somewhat difficult call. On the first pass, WTG, the blade didn't glide effortlessly, but didn't tug either. Shave was fine, but I definitely had to put a little something into moving the razor. Medium amount of blade feel.

Blade became more efficient on the second, ATG, pass. Glided with less effort, and the blade feel almost disappeared.

Result was a DFS with no blood or irritation. Hard to argue with that.

We'll see how the blade progresses tomorrow.

Rembrandt - blade 1, shave 3

My last impression was not wrong - this blade got dull very fast. Even on the first pass of this third shave there was a lot of resistance and tugging. By the second pass I thought I should abort, but I felt guilt, as I was so grateful to get the opportunity to shave with a vintage blade, so I kept going. I was cautious on the ATG third pass, I used very short strokes and had to pull the razor along quite a bit. I tried to leave good enough alone, but it is hard to do when one wants a better result. I got a couple weepers, likely due to the tugging, and I left some of my tough spots at a DFS.

I'm sad to report that it got too dull for me by the third shave. I had presumed this would be one of those long-lasting vintage blades, but that isn't what I experienced. Perhaps this is just a bad sample? I only requested two blades, I didn't want to be greedy, so I'll see how the second blade goes.

Similar story for me.

I tried the Rembrandt for the third shave this morning. I had much better prep than I usually do. Hot shower, then I used a slight bit of Arko soap and face lathered Derby Menthol this morning. I was able to shave one cheek. It felt like a thousand pairs of tweezers pulling my stubble. The other edge of the blade felt no better. I had to relather and switch to another loaded razor I had on the counter. I will try to palm strop it and try one more before switching blades and razors.

I feel somewhat misled by the card insert. This blade did have the bad print, perhaps it was defective.

One reason I asked for 5 Rembrandt-Supers was that hitting at least one degraded blade is almost a certainty after a half century or more has passed, even in a small sample.

With 5 stainless blades I also expect to get at least one or two that represent the original experience. With my first blade performing and lasting quite well, I am bracing my self for a less sterling experience when I finally unwrap blade 2.

Meanwhile, tonight I will upshift to a RazorRock Superslant OC 2++. It is darned efficient, but with the extreme bend it imparts, this will be the final platform from extracting the maximum from Rembrandt 1.

My blades arrived today.
The first thing I noticed was the foil wrappers. Very nice felt classy. I really wished more blade companies would do this.. next I unwrapped the blade and tried to compare it to a few other blades I had close by. I have read that these blades are hollow ground. But to the naked I I could not tell a difference. But I am curious if it will make the blade feel different?
I'm am very excited to try these blades.
Thank you @Grundi and @Space_Cadet for this pif, you guys are truly amazing.

Rembrandt Blade #1 Shave #4
Razor - 1964 Gillette Slim(5)
Blade - Rembrandt Stainless(4)
Brush - Yaqi Ocean
Soap - Arko
A/S - Alum, Thayers Facial Toner, Afta Fresh
Rating - 8/10 DFS

Another good shave, but I can tell this is about all this blade has to give, which isn't bad since I usually only get about five shaves from a modern blade anyway. If I had to rate this blade, I'd give it a solid 7.5/10 because it's not the best, but I'll take four good, irritation-free shaves any day

Blade 1 Shave 6 - getting closer to blade 2

Prep: Hot rag, lather with Nabulsi olive oil soap. Hydrate. Wash. Hot rag.

21+ hour stubble. After dinner shave. Vintage brush and excellent vintage soap.

> RazoRock Superslant OC 2++
> Rembrandt-Super (6)
> Colgate's Handy-Grip shaving stick
> Klenzo banded boar

IMG_5094.jpeg
IMG_5095.jpeg

Aftercare:
> alum rinsed with witch hazel
> Proraso green

Still very smooth, perhaps smoother than last evening in this hyper clamped razor. I worked to get my very close shave. I was rewarded with a little alum sting on my neck as a bonus.

To blade 2 or not to blade 2?
That is the question.
