What's new

Parker 82R?

This is the new one supposedly to counter the claims of shoddy craftsmanship & QC issues, right? Anyone give this one a try yet? I will say one thing--it looks good...

Yeah.. I got snookered into this one. I planned on starting a new thread and assemble some pictures to show folks the 2010 head. I think it's off, it's my opinion only. However, I will post pics and try to get close up's underneath the head. Some brownish material is exposed and I suspect a plating issue.

I have one of these (along with several other parkers, merkurs, gillettes, gems, etc).

It is the cadillac of non-adjustable TTO razors. Fit and Finish are stellar, and as I've said before the 2010 head is fabulous.

OK, I just wanted to bring this discussion back to life.

Has anyone had a good experience with the Parker 82r? I have. I like it a lot.

I don't know why I purchased the 82R as my 2nd razor after my ball end Tech. I read some good reviews and bought it off of Amazon. I guess I was too green to know that the EJ DE89L existed, and didn't know enough about vintage Gillettes to know what to look for. I just wanted something new, and right away, and the Parker seemed like a good bet.

For my first shave, I used one of the included Shark Chrome blades. My initial reaction was "Whoa, this is way more aggressive than my Tech." I thought I was going to cut myself. But even though I could really feel the blade sliding across my skin and could hear the whiskers popping like mad, I never, ever got any real irritation or burn using it. And it gave me a DFS shave with two WTG passes and some touch up just about every time.

Since then I picked up a DE89L, two Slims, a Feather Portable, and a Schick Krona. For the last several weeks I've been using the DE89L and Slim with different blades, trying to find the best combo for me. They're both fantastic razors, but I struggled with irritation and burn using certain blades.

Then just yesterday I decided to pop a thrice used Iridium into the 82r to finish it off. While it didn't give me a terribly close shave with three WTG passes because of the dulling blade, it also didn't give me any irritation or burn either. The shave was aggressive, yet smooth. I would definitely have gotten irritation and burn using a thrice used Iridium with any of the other razors and three passes.

For some reason the Parker 82r works really well for me. It's an interesting combination of an aggressive feeling shave that gets really close, and a smooth, irritation-free shave. Coming back to it reminded me of what I thought early on after I had used it for a while; that I could stop here and live with this razor for a long time.

So I'm happy with mine. Really happy. I may even like its performance as much or more than the Slim or DE89L at this point. I'm wondering if anyone else has had good experiences with this razor. I don't hear a lot about the 82r.

K.T.

P.S. - Yes, it lacks something in quality. The EJ DE89L would be the gold standard, here. When I got my Parker, I was a bit let down: the plating on the head was not pristine, a little thin here and there; the weld on the rod was rough, unpolished, and unplated; and the handle had several very small pre-plating dings, presumably from rough handling at the factory. But after finding that it works so well for me, I'm considering getting a backup sometime in the near future.

The 82R was my first razor, I also have a Gillette Aristocrat from around 1950 or so. I would say it does as good a job as the Aristocrat does, and I prefer the longer handle.

Now, is it a great razor? Not sure, but I have been happy with it. Certainly it looks like it will last for years of service. Now, I personally am not getting an ideal shave from it. But I think you will find that different faces require different razors. Right now I am getting ready to give open combs a try (I am not quite brave enough yet to try a slant :)).
