Pappy Van Winkle

Hi everyone,
A week or so I had what was a incredible taste of this at a Northern Kentucky restaurant.
It was the cheapest they offered 15 bucks for a once of ten year old. But OMG it was the best bourbon hands down I tried.
So my question is where when how is the best place to buy this? I know it would be expensive but it would be great to have at a special family occasion. My sister is on board to go in on me!!
But how where can we get this stuff.
Thanks and have a great day.

Amazing...
Van Winkle 10 Year was about $12 a bottle back when I was attending the University of Louisville in 1993
Pappy is a legit whiskey in all of its versions, but the price is simply insane. “All goods worth price charged” really does not apply here in my opinion.
Got to imbibe in some Van Winkle 23 year Family Reserve a while back. Told it was about $5,000 for the bottle. Tasty? Sure but not Five Thou worth though.
I remain steadfast in my opinion that Old Forester is a finest kind spirit and my favorite.
For a Van Winlkle (or Old Forester) source...try Liquor Barn in Louisville (if you are in that area)

Bourbon is doing the same thing that wine did in the 90s. Bunch of bourbon newbies read that pappy is the "best" and decide they need to have/try it at any cost.

Would not pay too much.
Heard it was about 300 bucks a bottle.
That is mucho.
Maybe would.
I just asked best way to purchase it.
That would be helpful.
Thanks.

Honestly, if you want a bottle, there are people selling it online for absurd prices. Most liquor stores hold raffles to sell a bottle, so there's not even a guarantee that you'll be able to buy a bottle.

Just buy a bottle of Blanton's and you'll be very happy.

Good luck finding a bottle. Your easiest bet is to purchase on the secondary market. You’ll easily pay $300 + for a bottle of the 10 year.

I stumbled upon a bottle freshly placed on the Costco shelf at Christmas. Paid actual MSRP. I’ve poured exactly 4 ounces of it lol!

At $300 each I'd buy as many as they'd sell! It is extremely rare to find, even in Kentucky. You have to have some connections to even see a bottle, let alone buy it!

A lot of guys think that Weller 12 is very close to Pappy....I did say "close".....kind of like a fake Rolex. A few of my friends (who were bored one day) made the poor man's pappy.....for sh*ts and giggles.....it was okay.

To me....Pappy and Old Rip are good and when I'm in Vegas I'll share a bottle with a few friends. I can afford Pappy and have sources that aren't to outrageous on their price.

Do I like others....yes. Do I stock my bar at home in Oklahoma with Pappy...no. I use to in my condo(1-2 bottles) in Vegas but don't anymore. I guess(for me) the hype...well, not really hype, more like "desire" has faded.

When in Vegas and at Vic and Anthony's (Vegas)I might have a glass before or after dinner.

**It's nice...don't get me wrong** But I like others and they're ...AVAILABLE....and with a good Cuban cigar(Cohiba/Partagas) there are other bourbons I enjoy with a good smoke.

Hope you find what you want and enjoy it!!!

Cheers.........:thumbup1:

P.S. The "BEST" way to purchase it. #1. See if your liquor store(s) are allocated Pappy. #2. If they are ...ask how many bottles. #3. Talk to the owner/manager and kiss their a## or do a bribe or whatever it takes to get what you want!!

I've never sipped bourbon at a bar in Oklahoma. Tell ya what...if Im out your way I'll stop over and you can line us up a few. Can't wait!!

Bourbon bars here in Okie land are okay and DON'T have Pappy. Vegas....yes. Oklahoma....no.

Last time I talked to a few liquor store owners I believe they said 3 bottles were allocated to Oklahoma. Guess what....yep.....the owners snapped those up.

EL SOFA....meet me in Vegas at Vic and Anthony's Sunday the 17th and I will buy you a few glasses.

Man, I wish I could!! Sadly I will be traveling in the other direction that day. Have fun in LV and remember to pick the winners. That's the secret to horse betting, but maybe it works in Vegas too.

I've never bet on horses.(I don't bet on games I don't know) Single deck blackjack.....Craps...Iron Cross and 3 Point Molly Method...poker.... NFL Football(at the South Point Casino)

Remember.......Vegas wasn't built on winners!!!

Pappy is good, and it's fun to get a pour from time to time, but (as already said) it just isn't worth much of the current pricing. It's like Johnny Walker Blue or a $35 Wagyu burger or a Louis Vuitton wallet. All those may be good products, but the name now makes up the lion's share (if not damn near all) the cost. They may be high quality, but they also tend to be low value.

That said, a $15, one-ounce pour of Pappy 10 isn't a bad way to get a taste of it and satisfy one's curiosity. I'm glad OP liked it so much. It really is good stuff--just not usually worth anything close to the price one finds it for.

Cohiba,
Thanks so much.
I do see the Ohio liquor board has a raffle to purchase.
As for Vic and Antony oh my celebrated my 50th and my sons 21st birthday there in 2011.
It is top 5 restaurant I have been to.
Will always remember.
Take care.

I had a chance to try pappy once while BSing with a bartender in Colorado. He poured me a small taste of the 20 year old. Good, yes. 50 times better than what I was drinking (Blanton's) no way!

This Pappy hoopla reminds me of the cigar craze in the nineties when people were chasing any recommended mention in Cigar Aficionado and paying sums of money, hoarding whatever they could find of the named names. There are great bourbons and ryes at a fraction the cost now and I could go at my convenience and buy a bottle at any time. While I'm a Rye drinker, I love a bottle of Knob Creek 120* Single Barrel Reserve... or some of the older Eagle Rare. There are so many fine bourbons now, it's a fine time to Indulge.

I got to a tasting of the full bourbon lineup on Saturday (10, 12,15, 20, and 23). It was great fun and some excellent whiskey, and there is no way I would pay the hype rate. It is great stuff, though.

I'm that way about a lot of "hype" items that have a high price and/or very limited availability. I'll admire it from a distance. The Pappy Van Winkle line of cigars is the same way.
