Pants? (Non Khakis and Non Suit?

I'd love to get a few pairs of pants and was wondering what my options were. I'm usually a T Shirt, Levis 501s properly faded and retro sneakers kind of guy, but I'd like to clean that up when I'm going out to dinner etc.

I just want to add that I'm not a fan of Khakis, as to me, they look best with combat boots
What are my best options?

I tend to be of like mind for the most part, although I favour nice jeans paired with a sport jacket, rather than upgrading my pants. Having said that, the last few years one of my staples has become slacks that are cut like jeans. In other words, it's the same cut and fit as jeans (yes, I realize there are countless cuts and fits for jeans) but made from brushed cotton or some other fine woven cotton (occasionally with a second fabric mixed in). You can get some really nice ones from some of the European labels, but you can also pick up cheap ones for under $50 from Calvin Klein and Kenneth Cole. I think I picked some up from a CK outlet store for $20/pair. Don't get me wrong, these are the sort of things that will probably be binned in a year or two. The European ones (and for the life of me I can't think of the German brand that actually makes them in Germany) will probably run upwards of $200, but you're getting the quality for you money, and they'll probably outlast your 501's.

A nice pair of corduroy pants and/or flannel trousers would serve you well for the cooler part of the year. If you are thinking of primarily evening wear ...

... then stick with darker colours (but not black.)

Also, right now is a good time to pick up a few pair of summer slacks on sale ... a nice cotton-linen mix would be great.
