What's new

Pair of odd razor hones

Bought a small lot of 5 stones from Germany a while back,
It contained a terrific coticule bout (which I have posted in coti love thread), a frankonian, a 5 x 2” light green thuri and these 2 stones

The white stone feels and smells like a thuringian, is certainly as fine as one, but is noticeably harder. Kind of reminds me of a really hard block of chalk. Very slow stone

The second is like an arky, but different.
Super hard and dense, doesn’t seem to be porous, and is slow
The surface sparkles like the grain size is quite large, but under a razor it is very fine.

Anyone got some similar stones ?

It is awesome to think that the 5 stones were probably someone’s prized sharpening collection.
They once again have a loving home and will sharpen many more razors

It seemed too pale to be a coti, and I’ve never lines quite like that in a coti.
but i just tested it with a slurry and it did darken the slurry slightly after 50 or so laps. With water it seems to be just polishing as I did 5 sets of half strokes with just water after and it didn’t appear to darken the water at all.

Coti's can be perfectly white, and the lines are actually the most defining clue for me that it's a coti.
Very fine coti's can be slow on water, especially if the razor is already finished or polished. Try a freshly beveled 1k finished razor and see if the stone pulls any swarf.

Sorry for the poor photos, it is too dark outside to get natural light photos now.
But this shows the colour of the stone next to a fairly typically yellow coti for comparison

Thanks for the quick replies gents.
I’ll properly bevel the edges on it tomorrow, and take a less finished razor over it and post the results

Tested on two different razors which I had rebevelled, and even with a fair amount of pressure the stone doesn’t cut, I slurried the stone and it was maybe marginally faster than on a finished razor.
Wickedly fine though and It’ll give me some lovely edges 😃
