OUMO Brush Experience - Badger & Synthetic

Mine arrived yesterday and I washed it with shampoo, a test lather left on the knot for 1/2 hour, soaking for a couple of hours with a little bit of apple vinegar, distilled water and a hint of baking soda.

I tried it today, will wait for a week or so for a small review, but the first impressions were great.

Nice looking brush you got there! I haven't tried a bulb knot from Oumo and I kind of regret not getting one. Also, that handle is quite easy to work with. It sometimes feels a bit small but it works well for most of my shaves.

Cheers!
This one is set 24x47mm and i can tell it's extremely dense, bit more than a M&F blonde badger with the backbone of a Shavemack D01 and tips of the better quality Simpson Best.

At the moment it's definitely a big soap consumer.

I thought I was done with my Oumo purchases but my BAD got to me a bit. I got couple of their 2020 LE brushes. I really enjoy their "Mini Chubby" handles so I've been wanting to get couple more to complete my collections. I got couple of their WT knots so hopefully they're not too scrubby with the lower loft.

I also got one of their newest synthetics, the 4th gen Oumo synthetic. It looks nice but I'm hoping that it feels nice as well. It'll probably take couple weeks at least.

Lastly, FYI Oumo store did raise their prices on SHD badger knots due to the hard circumstances with the virus. Even though I do enjoy Oumo brushes, it's becoming harder to buy them at the normal prices. I am probably done with my purchases unless they present amazing deals for a new knot. Buy at your own discretion as prices are rising and the shipping, as always, can suck. That's just the nature of the business overseas.

I haven't shaved with them yet but I have cleaned them thoroughly with soap and water. The badgers stink a bit but nothing crazy. Synthetic knot has a bit of chemical scent but it'll go away with more uses.

The WT knots are really nice for the value. I don't think they'll be prickly but will maintain the softness while having mid scrub. I'll be shaving with them soon. Also, I'm planning to put the 4th Gen knot in one of my empty Rudy Vey handles but I need to drill it a bit deeper. Right now, the handle is barely accepting the knot so I need more depth. More to follow...

Quick brush review - Oumo 2020 LE brush - 24mm WT knot

SOTD 04042020.jpg

First impression - I love the handle. The color is a lot better in person as it shimmers in its dark navy color. The shape is easy and comfortable to hold. The knot is fairly dense as well.

The 24mm WT knot is a great knot. It's advertised as a budget knot and it has more scrub than the premiums like HM or Manchuria. The scrub is at a comfortable level but I can irritate my skin if I face lather for too long. Just go for a good exfoliation and that should result in a great shave.

In terms of comparison, it reminds me of denser Yaqi 2-band badgers. Soft with mid scrub and mid backbone. Very balanced knot IMO. Also, I'm enjoying the 24mm better than the 26mm. 26mm has mid-high backbone/density and it pushes my skin around a bit too much for my taste. They both give a good face feel so it's more of a preference at this point.

I thought the Yaqi two-band 24mm was enormous once it bloomed out. How does this one compare?

First thing that I notice about this brush is that it is very Dense. It doesn't splay as easily as I'd like and it has plenty of backbone. When wet, the brush is still soft but it has mid scrubby feel. It's not a daily driver for me but it'll be great for 2-3 days of growth. The tips are not as soft as HM or Manchuria and is colored a bit darker than them. No real gel tips but it feels more natural. This brush has shed around 10 hairs so far with 3 lathering sessions so it's doing pretty good. The knot smelled like badger a bit but the smell is phasing away with each lather.

Would I recommend this knot? Yes, at the discounted price. It reminds me of Yaqi 2-band badger except way denser. It definitely has a nice face feel but it can be scrubby for some. It's not like pure or best badger but a bit scrubby for a 2-band. I got this mostly for the handle and the LE model but it's a nice brush to keep in my collection. I'm thinking of bowl lathering with the WT knots to save some of the exfoliation on the face.

This knot gave me a good vibe to start off. The tips are super silky but it still maintains some backbone and springy feel. I am on the hunt for natural feeling synthetics (which is an oxymoron) and this comes pretty close to my expectation.

When I was washing this knot, it gave a fair bit of resistance. However, I did not feel any prickly sensation and that is one of my big turn-offs for synthetics.

Once I knotted the knot in this beautiful R7 handle, I face lathered with it. It feels very nice on the face and comes very close to what I'm looking for. Just enough backbone (Set at 57mm loft), no prickly sensation, and splays relatively easily. The loft probably has a lot to do with it since I was forced to set a bit higher. In the end, I love the face feel on this.

To compare to other synthetics, this one stands towards the softer spectrum. The extreme is Motherlode knot and this one is a bit far from it. However, as I get closer to Plissoft/Maggard synthetic, this one is quite similar to it. Soft tips, low scrub, and low-mid backbone. This is not as stiff as Tuxedo.

In conclusion, I love this knot set at a higher loft. To be fair, Plissoft knots perform/feel very close to this knot. Maybe I am missing the mark and should be satisfied with the plissoft knots instead of looking for that unicorn out there. Regardless, I enjoy this brush and will continue to use it in my rotation.

This brush is DENSE and mid-high SCRUBBY. I definitely prefer the Fan shape more as it gives less backbone. It's a beautiful brush but as I was face lathering with it today, I learned more that it can lead to some irritation. I didn't get any today but if I shaved with it, I could've gotten irritation. I am planning for a bowl lather with this soon. Again, it's very DENSE and mid-high Scrubby.

@Timeclo

Have you tried the oumo Cashmere knot? I am looking for a 28mm one and I am thinking on trying their chachmere knot. I am also considering the motherload also. What would you recommend please?

I have not tried their Cashmere knot so I wouldn't be able to comment on that. I know APshaveco has a cashmere knot so that might be a good source.

As for Motherlode knot, I enjoy it a lot. It is the softest knot I tried but it has no backbone at all and is very floppy. If you want a soft knot with no care for backbone, this one will be perfect. This would be my daily driver if I were to shave daily.

Another quick note,

Oumo's Thin-haired Tuxedo synthetic knot is actually the same as their Motherlode knot, just different color schemes. I confirmed it with Alina and I have one on the way as well.

Thanks. I have heard good comments on Apshave but my personal experience was not that good.

Let us know pls how does the tuxedo turns out.

Oh yes, I have the Yaqi version of the motherlode on the way. They call it the "mink" knot. Not sure why but it looks exactly the same as the motherlode.
No, are two different fibers. Mother lode is more subtle (I have both fibers)

No, it's not true. It all depends on how many millimeters the knot is. Being then very thin fibers you must have at least a 28 or 30mm x 50mm

No, totally different fibers in terms of thickness, softness and backbone.

I have the oumo 28mm manchurian shd knot with oumo handle and it is a very dense and very soft brush. I cannot imagine a brush that is softer feel and yet has a lot of support because of its density. For its price and size it is pretty hard to beat I think.

Of course, setting the motherlode knot deep and getting a 28-30mm will make a difference but compared to other knots, the motherlode is a lot more floppy with less backbone.

As for the thin-haired tuxedo, I confirmed with the shop that it was the same as motherlode. I own both and can confirm as well that they feel the same.

Exactly. The manchurian and handmaster knots provide an excellent feel for a great value. I think they can match upto any badgers out there imo. I'm happy with my Oumo knots.

I gotta ask, I picked up a 24mm Cashmere and 22mm Mother Lode when they mislabelled the listings with free shipping and was thinking of prepping my handles while they make their journey over.

What lofts should I be looking to start with for the both of them?

Suggestion -
Cashmere => 53mm
Mother Lode => 48 mm
