Oristo Stealth (DLC) Razor Review

Hi Gents,

This is my review of the Oristo Stealth razor, which is available via stashedandfound.com

Packaging:
I really like the packaging. It's a nice, sturdy cardboard box with a nice print of the Oristo razor family.
In the box, you will find the complete razor along with two tucks of DE blades (Astra and Shark).

There's no foam insert but more the folds of the cardboard internals hold everything in place.
Not that it's a big deal, but I'd really like to see all DE razors being shipped in small packaging which can also double as a travel case/tin.

Razor Aesthetics:
The razor is SEXY! Plain and simple! The jet black, DLC coating is just awesome to look at and it is visually very pleasing. My wife thinks it's the best razor she's seen!
The handle is a very nice length, not too heavy and not light either. It's very well balanced as a whole and the handle shape is also very ergonomic in practice.
I am a fan of slightly thicker handles with a bit of heft (70g to 90g for the handle is my preferred weight). The Oristo razor as a whole is not very hefty but then, I can expect it to be made just for me. The weight will be enjoyed by the majority I would think.

Razor performance:
Oristo is a very smooth shaving razor! I would classify it as mild. I don't like comparing razors head to head as it's not just the weight but the entire engineering of the head geometry/blade gap/cutting angle. For me, I would say the Oristo is capable of giving BBS shaves for up to medium-heavy growth. As my growth is a bit more on the heavier side (although no steel wire!), the Oristo did struggle a little to get me to BBS, but I was definitely able to achieve DFS with 2 passes plus touch-ups (more touch-ups than my Progress and Rockwell).

Comfort wise, it's actually a very comfortable razor to use. At first, I thought it was too mild but as I kept using it, I realised it's just very smooth as opposed to being too mild (e.g. like a Gillette Blue Tip, which is just too mild to give me anything beyond an SAS).

The DLC coating is a coating that literally makes a difference in the shaving process. I thought it might just be a gimmick but it literally makes the razor glide on the face. To test this, I made a very thick lather, where my other razors would struggle a little to glide through it but the Oristo's DLC ensured every stroke was smooth as butta'!!!

Summary:
If Oristo (or any 3 piece razor) adopted the plate system like Rockwell, then basically any razor could become a one-stop-shop. Never-the-less, Oristo is a great razor that will satisfy the majority of users with its striking looks, smooth shaving and ultra glide (Stealth DLC model). The only exception IMO would be people at the heavy growth end of the spectrum.

Congrats to Oristo for a successful funding campaign. Clearly, this company has their thinking caps on and I look forward to more innovative designs in the future.
I hope my review will be useful for the shaving community.

I got an Oristo Sheen when it was a kickstarter campaign and can't say enough good things about the razor. Definitely good looking, well balanced, and well made. I like what you said about the razor being smooth as being different from mild. To me, too much times a razor is described as aggressive or mild, when the real question is how efficient is it. If it shaves you clean in two passes and you have to stop to check your angle because you can't feel it against your face, that is what a razor should be and the fact that you can't hear it cut your whiskers off or feel like a buzz saw against your face, all the better. After just one shave, the Oristo moved to the top of my regular rotation. I am hoping the word starts to spread a little quicker because I want this company to succeed. They have such a good product.

It is said that the company behind the Oristo is the same as the maker of RazoRock's Black Mamba razor - Other than the various finishes, it looks exactly the same. Heck, they are even located in the same city (Toronto). There's a much bigger markup on the Oristo but if you want a Mamba now then this might be the way to get it. With that said, RazoRock (Joe) has recently mentioned that he plans on modifying the Mamba design and bringing that to the market.

Nope, they just copied the design, Rasorock owner said it itself on Reddit. But he said he didn't mind, as Black Mamba was experimental, and he is not planning to continue producing.

I glad this design got a new life - proud owner of Oristo Sheen from Kickstarter and love it as a mild, but effective razor for everyday shaving :)

Craftsmanship of head and handle is very good.

I stand corrected - I appreciate the comments on it.

Unfortunately, the edit window is ridiculously short...I already cannot edit my previous post from less than an hour ago.

A bit pricier , but I guess most new makers are trying to get what people are willing to pay. does it really shave you that much better ?

I am glad I got mine when it was a kickstarter campaign. They were supposed to come out with the Sheen at abut $120, but they barely got enough funding from kickstarter to cover the pledges and so had to jack up the retail prices a little. I pledged as soon as I found out that this was a Black Mamba clone (I saw Joe's comment on the Reddit), and I am really glad I did because it is a great shaver and because the retail price went up significantly once it went into production. Oh, and YES, it really shaves me much better.

The handle is a little different than the Black Mamba's, and I've seen some reviewers who have used both saying that there is a difference in the shave. So maybe there were some changes that aren't visible to the naked eye. The company's website also shows a new model that is being developed. It looks like it will have the same head, but a different handle and finish.

Spendy little bugger.

The way I understood it, which could be wrong of course, is that RazoRock and Stashed and Found (Oristo) are using the same machining company.

I haven't used it yet, but it looks good. I've said it before. I think the handle goes nicely with the head. Both have curves.
