What's new

Open combs not for me ... ?

I've tried, and I've got some beauties (#88, NEW, Deluxe). I get a decent shave but it's just feels sort of irritating while it's happening. Sort of an unpleasant scraping feeling.

I can convince myself that I'll get it down, but then when I get back to my parat or Rocket HD, I remember what I'm missing ...

on another note, loving the Vergulde Hand soap (I know it has fans and detractors, but I'm a fan...)

With the open combs, I find using zero pressure is very important. I will also add that while they cut a lot of hair, I shave everyday without exception so they just irritate me if I use them all the time. I mix them (have an Old and a New) up with a 30s Tech. The rotation is good because I can retreat to the Tech if I need something milder.

Open combs aren't for everyone. In a jesture of charity, I will happily pay shipping on you New Delux, send me a PM.

If you get scraping with the open comb the angle is wrong. Get the cap almost flat to the face and use less pressure.

As always, YMMV. I find open combs far nicer and milder for my skin. Mentioned Rocket HD is also nice, but not so effective and I get also a little bit of irritation with it. But with any OC I've tried (several Old Types and Senator) I can get really nice, mild shaves. They don't cut my whiskers in a dramatic way, I'm taking 4 passes but after them... My face is smooth and feeling nice. Can't recommend anything more then OC.

Hi there,

Seems like you and I have similar comfort results with the open comb types. For whatever the reason, I can feel the blade on my face more than I prefer. That translates into a shave that just isn't as comfortable for me as when using other razor types. It's not my technique that's off, but instead it's the design of these open comb types that don't agree with me. I don't get weepers or razor burn when using em, but I DO need to really pay attention to detail.

After trying 10-12 different OC types, I've realized they can only be used as a change of pace razor. It's really a shame, because the shaves using an OC are by far the closest I've ever gotten with a DE. Even my fatboy/feather combo can't leave my face that smooth. I guess I'll need to buy an adjustable OC soon.......heh.

I know what you're going through,

Martin

Oh, you mentioned using a DELUXE......those things are extremely aggressive and I just can't use em. Makes a Slant feel like a Weishi. What's even more intense is something like an old Bulldog or Single Ring. Those things are special.....heh.

Great pointers guys.

Yeah, only got a couple of nicks with the DeLuxe but the PO and I agree: the single closest shave ever.

Just did GFT coconut soap + Parat, though and it's hard to beat :001_smile

I think I'm like you above: just a little harsh for my skin.

Yep, check the angle.

Also, some open combs can be very aggressive, like the old Muhle R41. But others, like the Gillette New, are very smooth shavers. Personally, I think the New is one of the best shavers around, open comb or otherwise.

The first open comb I tried gave similar results. Then after ignoring that razor for months, tried it again again and got great results. Improved technique? Who knows. But it seems to work fine for me now.:thumbup1:

Tried a New this week. Felt good, not too close of a shave and gave me ingrowns. I'm going to go back to my SS until I get rid of the ingrowns and go back to the New and give it another shot. Too pretty of a razor to get rid of!

I only have one Old Type but I've found it to be a mild shaver, milder than some of their closed comb models. Mine is the common ball handle one without a serial number, that you see on Ebay with the normally cracked handle. They aren't very expensive, maybe you could give one of those a shot.

Yes! And when you get it right, you may hear the blade singing, not scraping - a sound I don't notice with closed-comb razors.

Agreed. NEWs are wonderful shavers!

Since I rediscovered open combs, I actually have to be careful when I use milder razors because they require additional passes. Open combs, when used correctly, are very efficient.

Try a slant. I use both a slant and open combs (Merkur 11C and Gillette New long comb) and I think the slant is slightly better. As efficient as an open comb is - I believe a slant to be even more efficient.

Exactly...most TTO's are like shaving with stabilizers.

+1 on all the angle suggestions. I use open combs exclusively, but when I was using both open and closed comb razors, I noticed that open's are far less forgiving of bad angle and technique.
