Open comb search

The next subject of my product try-outs is going to be an open comb razor.

Would anyone care to recommend a good one? I'm looking for something that is not to hard to obtain (no rare vintage, tough-to-find stuff). I have a tough beard with some difficult spots on my neck.

I love my Gillette New with short combs. Its a little bit aggressive but not much worse than a Red Tip. My second favorite is the GEM Clog Pruf. Its a SE razor not a DE, but its hands down my favorite. Technically its only half open comb, but if you round that figure it should count

Modern, Merkur Open Comb (11c I think)

Vintage, Gillette NEW or Gillette Old Type.

I would pick a Gillette NEW first...

Either a Gillette NEW, Or "Old Style" would be a good place to start. If you want to venture into the world of SE's then give the Open Comb Micromatic a try.

The Gillette New would be the least agressive of these three.

This is the razor I meant. I prefer the short comb style, but short and long combs are not all that much different.

Look at cooncat bobs opens, have two Bull mastiffs, are fantastic razors.

I purchased a long comb Gillette NEW a few months ago. They show up on b/s/t wiht some regularity. I'll probably pick up a non-vintage open-comb one of these days just so I can compare, but I really like and highly recommend a NEW.

The best shaving open comb heads that I have used are the British Long Comb New, the New Improved and the New Deluxe. For reference, here is an image of some open combs.

Thank you. I love it. It is good if i shaved the day before or if I go 2 weeks without shaving, which leaves me with a full out grizzly man beard, and it has no problem with mowing it down, no trimming, 2 pass BBS.

That Muhle is beautiful... is there a model number or is that the only one they make with open comb? *edit* Looks like it is the R41?

The 11c seems to be a really affordable option.
