Open Comb Fan Thinking About a Superspeed

I figure I've got to have at least one Super Speed in my collection, and I'm looking at the Red Tips and 40's era Supers Speed. A British Rocket would be great, but I don't see them too often. I like heavier razors, also I prefer them to be on the aggressive side.

Also, I've got a slightly beat-up Fatboy, does that cover the TTO void in my stable?

Thoughts?

Unless you really like a more mild razor you probably won't find it efficient enough I would stick with the fatboy and maybe try a redtip but it is several steps down on the efficiency scale from the R41 or fatip.

I am a big fan of the 40s style Super Speed and they get a lot of praise around here, but I also have heard some folks class them toward the milder end of the spectrum. What number works best for you on that FatBoy?

I have adjustable and different design razors in my team....I do love open Combs but i also love variety.

I'm with alex2363...I do love a lively razor, but there is something to be said for the shave you can get out of a "mild" vanilla Super Speed, and the skill and technique needed to get the job done with it.

A ss with a med prep and you will not be thinking it is mild. i understand the gap and agressiveness but a SS with a sharp blade will show you your poor technique and bite just as hard. The mildness leads to a fast shave yet just gets it done.

@ Dr. Roadrash- thats the first time someone on this site told me NOT to buy a razor. Good call though, maybe I should paint the TTO knob of my Fatboy red and call it a day.

I keep my Fatboy at 6, and that's when I want a mellow shave, otherwise it's the Fatip or the old boy Gillettes.

I have a Red Tip and imo its the best superspeed of them all. Easy to use and gives very fine close shaves without being specially agressive. It was my favorite razor to recently before i discovered Open Combs.

I have two Super Speeds coming in the mail from the bay, and I have no experience with vintage Gillette razors, so I will be right along with you in trying a Super Speed for the first time. I am a really big fan of the rough textured handle though, and I find that I do like a mild shaver because my beard doesn't grow very fast.

I've found that the SS responds well to different blades, particularly with sharper ones. On my face, with derbys and 7oclock yellows it is a milder shave. Astra SPs....very close shave.

I am the opposite of the OP in that I have NO open combs, just these. I love my Super Speeds but the Red Tip just has a special starting role in the line-up!
