What's new

One week in

Hey everyone, just got through my first week shaving with a DE razor. I finally got a good lather tonight, and it really made quite a difference. Got my first DFS. 3 passes 2-WTG 1-XTG. I tried a ATG earlier in the week. Not for me.

I probably did too much experimenting my first week. Didn't used to shave but 2-3 times a week, but shaved everyday this past week lol.

I will be watching this thread as I am about to embark on the DE trail soon.

I'm curious, what are you using to lather (brush and cream/soap)? Do you face or bowl/scuttle lather?

I've been bowl lathering with TOBS sandalwood and an omega 599 silver tip brush. A lot of trial and error (mostly error) to get the right consistency. I was using too much water and couldn't get it thick enough. Mantics videos helped me out. I'd recommend watching his videos.

The TOBS sandalwood is great though. Nice scent, and now that I've got my lather technique down a little better works quite well.

Mantic's videos are outstanding! Have you tried building practice lathers? I found that to be really useful. Congratulations on getting a good lather!

I know that feeling!
I started about a month ago, and at first had some trouble with the lather, but with time and practise I also got to find the right "spot".
And like you, I also started shaving everyday, and wanting to shave more than once a day, it's addicting :w00t:

Good job there Andrew, congrats.
Be careful with shaving everyday if you only ever shaved 2-3 times per week before DE shaving. DE blades are sharp and as a newbee you have a good chance of taking off a good deal of skin which can quickly get a bit sore if your shaving often. Just be aware. I see that ATG isn't working for you. Have you gone XTG in a 45 degree angle? I do that at times just for an extra shot at my beard. But you said you got a DFS so I guess you're getting a good deal of hair off.

Good job.

I've mainly doing 2 wtg passes with a xtg depending how my face feels after the first 2 passes. I haven't had much issue with nicks or irritation, with the exception of my atg pass I tried. That irritation was still better than what I used to get with a cartridge. I'll probably back down to shaving every other day once laziness sets in, but right now I'm like a kid with a new toy on Christmas

I love Mantic's videos and they have taught me a lot (as has the advice I get on B&B). Fortunately I have little problem with lathering. Just lucky I guess.

Anyway, have you tried face lathering with that? I guess since you have finally got it down, you may not need to try this, but I found it a bit easier when I was first starting. I think the water level is somehow easier to monitor directly on the face. Then again, I have never used TOBS.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Keep up the every day shaving. It is the best way to get it down correctly. Develop good habits and stick with them

I wonder if shaving everyday with a proper technique is better on your skin than shaving every 3-4 days and trying to make it through a thick amount of hair. It seems it might be the case for me. My skins never felt better since I've started shaving properly

High & welcome.
TOBS creams are fantastic to face lather with. I firmly believe that also gives a better shave than using a bowl. Give it a try!
