One Turtle Farther Down

RAD has put the hoodoo on me in a new way. I do not own a vintage DE, and didn't intend on opening this can of turtles. Then I saw a photo(s). The razor is on its way. So where do I go to get info on Gillette New Long Combs? :confused1

Beautiful!
I have a Made In England NEW LC and all I can say is that it is magnificent- the perfect balance between aggression and forgiveness.
Our Brothers in BOTOC have much to say about the NEW, and mr-razor Gillette history site has a whole section devoted to it.
I haven't used every razor Gillette ever made (yet!) but I believe they reached the pinnacle of razor design with the NEW.
Congratulations on a fine acquisition :thumbup1:

Whoever owned it previously polished the plating all the way off that head. It's down to brass. That's why it appears to be a two-tone razor.

Nice shaver, though.

There should be a warning somewhere to never buy from this eBay seller "Sport Shaving". He takes all the plating off the razor and then polishes the brass making it seem like its a nice shiny specimen when without any plating these razors are not worth much.

It would be fine if he would say in his listings that there is no plating left, but he rarely does. I saw him list a Milord one time saying "perfect beautiful condition" when it was missing all of it's plating, but he shined the brass right up to make it look like gold plating in photos. I messaged him and told him to stop deceiving buyers. His reply was, "What am I supposed to do, say it's in poor condition?" My guess is he buys razors in poor condition off eBay and takes a jewelry wheel to them.

If you just purchased this a daily shaver then no big deal, but I hope you didn't pay too much for it.

Really. Thanks for the warning...too late for this. He didn't misrepresent anything. Yeah, word should go out. And you're right. He says he's a jeweler by trade. Although I didn't buy for value, but looks, but I don't like being mislead.

I agree, I can't help but chuckle a bit when I see his prices for razors that will look like hammered crap after their first use! There really should be a warning to beware of this guy!

nice!

Many argue that the long comb new is the greatest open comb Gillette made, its a very very smooth shaver.

Huh . . . my take is that $50ish for a Gillette New long comb that, aside from having no plating, has no visible flaws and has been cleaned may be worth it. Then again, I am aware that those razors have no plating.

If I do order one and like how it works, my plan was to either get RestoredRazors to do the cap and handle in rose gold and the base plate in gold to mimic the same color scheme, or the same thing but replace the handle with a UFO red bronze handle as they just plain look cool. That would be . . . $60 for the New, plus $60ish for replating, plus $90? for the UFO handle if I go that route. Ouch, but darn it would look cool . . .

I suppose I could get a cheaper New off of ebay or B/S/T, but I do like the idea of a really cleaned up razor that I wouldn't have to clean.

Very nice "Steampunk" NEW and a good starter into vintage Gillettes.

Kingfisher and Ace McCool
While this Sport Shaving guy really overcharges for user grade razors he may not be stripping razors as I've come across tons of these naked NEW's in the wild.
Granted I'd not pay more than a 10 spot for one as a half hour with some Wiemans and soft cloth can get me the same results and save me 40 bucks.

Well no he is not stripping a perfectly good razor. He is taking razors with minor/major plate loss and polishing the rest off. I've seen him sell countless gold razors all perfectly polished to the brass.

Chadao - seeing you buy one has "encouraged" me to buy one as well! 1 Gillette New long comb with the same copper/brass/handle. If it shaves well enough to be "the one," I will probably get it plated at RestoredRazors/onotoman (I really like the idea of rose gold/gold alternating colors). I may substitute a different handle, though.

I recently bought a 1910 Single Ring from Nick at Sport Shaving, and in his description he noted the plate loss and other potential issues with that razor, so I felt he made a full disclosure of the razor set. Also he restored the case better than I could have. In addition to that s I read the full description, he stated it was alright to contact him to make a legitimate offer, which I and anyone could have done. So I made an offer much less than his posted "buy it now" price and we concluded our deal within the rules and parameters of his agreements with eBay. He clearly stated he has the right to end any auction at any time, since he has two brick and mortar stores where these razors are on display. Even at that eBay did get thier "cut" from our transaction, as they should have. Nothing improper about it. I knew what I was getting, and made a fair bargain, and all party's were satisfied, including eBay. I mean no offense to anyone, I simply wish for the man to get a fair shake. Thanks for hearing me out.

Mormon Bridge...absolutely, Nick did not misrepresent the razor. I just didn't ask the right questions. Guess since I don't collect vintage DE's...or didn't, I just hope I get a good shaving razor. If I like it enough, I will get it re-plated. And now I have two OC's. Thanks for all the info, everyone. And what the check, it's just one turtle.

I'm probably the wrong person to answer this, ArNav, but I have read the New Long Comb is milder than the New Short Comb. I have also seen the news mentioned as some of the best vintage Gillettes. And that probably goes beyond my level of knowledge. :001_tongu

Is there a big difference between the long comb and the short comb?
