One of the great sandwiches: Bahn Mi

I finally opened up the Yelp app I installed forever ago on my phone, because I was looking for a sandwich shop near my office. I was looking for something other than a chain or Italian (there is a killer Italian deli nearby, but you can only go to the well so many times).

It brought up a new place called Saigon Subs. I havent had a bahn mi in ages, it was less than 5 min away - so the mission parameters were defined.

For $3.25 I got a loaded bahn mi and for another $3 I bought a bubble tea - that $6 total is less than just a sandwich in the company's cafe!

It was awesome; I just love that crisp roll, crunchy vegetables and then hit of cilantro. The bubble tea was different, First time having one; I have only seen it being consumed on the travel-foody programs with Anthony Bourdain or Andrew Zimmerman. I would try it again....with TWO of those bahn mi sandwiches

They are great sandwiches. There is actually a food truck in Boston (Bon Me) that sells them now. However, they're $6, while the actual Vietnamese places in Boston's Chinatown sell them for around $2.

Nick is correct Ba Le is the best but out of the way for most. Nick you should go across the street to Sun Wah and order the duck, it will feed 2-3.

The reason the bread is so crisp is they use a bit of rice flour in the dough. Vietnamese food is truly the best of East and West fusion.

Been there, done that. And you're right - the duck is amazing. So is the lemongrass chicken at some of the other tiny places in that neighborhood.

And you're also right that Broadway and Argyle is a bit off the beaten path for most visitors to Chicago. It's hard to recommend that someone staying in a downtown hotel take a $15 taxi ride for a $3.50 sandwich. For we locals, however, it's one of the best deals you can find.

I was in Boston a few weeks ago visiting a friend. On my first day there I had an opportunity to wander around Chinatown where I had my first Bahn Mi. It was absolutely delicious, and was less than $3!

I eat this most weekends in Saint Louis at a place called Banh Mi So 1. The sandwich I get is a combination of pork and pate. The bread is always a perfect level of crustiness. I love the chili paste that is at the restaurant although I normally get take away. Not sure if it is sambal or what, but that's normally what I use when I get home. And yes, it's $3.50. Add a dollar for extra meat.
