What's new

On Second Thought, . . . .

It is not uncommon for me to walk away from the sink absolutely thrilled with the quality of my shave; smooth to the touch (w/, a/, and xtg), no irritation, no weepers, etc. It is also not uncommon for me to be back at the mirror an hour or so later re-evaluating what I thought was the best shave ever just a little while ago. The grades never go up.

Does this happen to you? To what do you attribute the revision?

I do the same thing! I am initially convinced that I have completed the best shave possible, but an hour or two later I begin to wonder if I could've done a better job on my neck/jawline. It seems that I can get BBS on my entire face EXCEPT for my jawline area. For whatever reason I always can feel a bit of stubble in that area no matter how many angles I use to attack it....I have just learned to live with it for the most part...

Ask me about shaving naked!
I find the same thing about certain areas. I've concluded the shave feels smooth when the skin's wet, but you can feel stubble when dry. An exceedingly sharp blade helps quite a lot and can eliminate most of it in my limited experience, assuming my technique isn't improving that much in a couple of days. As an experiment, I went back over moistened skin that displayed that "dry stubble" with a disposable and then really BBS. So I tried doing the same with a straight (VERY VERY carefully) with the same results.

If the edge is not 5++, I think you're going to have to do "remediation".

Cheers, Steve

Setting aside an obvious question regarding whether lycanthropes can shave in a mirror, on third thought, I think I am more likely to go back and down-grade a wedge shave than the hollows. My love for the heavier grinds may be wishful shaving . . . .

+1 I have the exact same problem. No matter how I hold the razor, no matter what angle I use, I can never get this area completely without skinning myself.

There's always somebody that has the opposite experience, so I guess it'll be me this time. More often than not I get great shaves with a straight but now and again I find that after a rinse and aftershave, what I thought was just an ok shave has improved to a good shave.

That's disappointing to hear that you're only getting an hour+ from a shave. Can't really be from a dull razor if you're happy initially. Do you get the same results with a DE?

Every 24 to 120 hours I find myself back at the mirror trying again...

Early on, I might shave, go back an hour later, do a touch up, a few hours later, do it again... Now I just don't take that time, and usually live with whatever I can get off a single pass :).
