Just used my Omega boar for the first time, is it usual for boar brushes to have a chemical smell at first? I've only ever used badger brushes in the past and have never had this smell before.

Yep, at first they can smell funky when wet. Goes away with use. Which one you got? I've got an Omega 10049, great brush, cheap too.
Do a few lathers with it and let it dry completely between.. you can also wash it with some animal shampoo..

It's a 48, lathers tabac beautifully, good to know the foul smell does disappear. Thanks
Love my Omega 31064. Smell completely goes away with use, softness of the tips gets better with a few uses, but is ready to use right out of the plastic sleeve it comes in.
Some say that the banded boars does not smell as mush as the natural ones..
48 and 49 are probably the smeliest Omegas for a couple of weeks, but they are great brushes. I consider the knot of 48 a bit big, 49 is perfect, IMHO.
