What's new

Omega 49

Just got my new Omega 49 today!

It's bigger than I expected!!! :w00t: (I'd read the dimensions, but not actually compared them to my existing brushes).

I got the red handle, so it stands out from the crowd even more :001_smile

No smell when I opened the box. However, as soon as I rinsed it before applying shampoo I got a really strong smell of wet dog! 2 shampoos and a couple of test lathers (with Palmolive) and it's getting better. A couple of stray hairs fell out but I'm putting them down to natural loss rather than shedding!

Couldn't wait to try it so I did a full face lather with a Palmolive stick, nice soft tips and it holds water pretty well. Still a faint aroma of damp dog but the "soapiness" of the Palmolive helped to mask it :001_smile

Nice big handle, with a useful tapered waist for a safe grip with wet hands.

Looking forward to breaking it in....I think this will easily be my new favourite brush!!:w00t:

i got my 49 in black a couple of weeks ago. finally, the ends have finished splitting and the bristles which have felt like straw are beginning to soften.

it's a good brush, especially for the absurdly low price i paid, but i'm still trying to figure out if it offers any unique advantages over a badger brush

the jury is still deliberating but one thing's for sure is that the omega punches above its weight.

I have one of these coming, party as i want to try boar but also if it doesn't work out i can ream it out and put in the 28mm silvertip knot i have coming from golden nib.

Got mine via ebay from the vendor that shall remain nameless! Free shipping in the UK so it was a bargain at £8 ($12).

Likewise, he doesn't take paypal from his site anymore probably due to fees so ebay it was.

Yours red by any chance?

The Omega 49 is a rip snortin', Williams tamin', big bad mutha of a brush. It eats soaps for breakfast and spits out the bones. It starts out good and just gets better.

Mine came into it's own after I used a break in method I saw linked from another forum...briefly, soak the bristles in almost boiling water, then swirl and agitate. Doing this a couple times seemed to get the tips to split in short order.

This brush seems to thrive on hard use. After I rinse and shake it, it gets a vigorous scrubbing against a towel to help get it dry and beat up the tips even more. I figure if it falls apart, at the price, who cares?

After four months of my abuse, the 49 laughs at my puny efforts to destroy it and only gets softer and makes better lather every time.

I wonder if the black collet can be taken out, as i said above i might put my 28mm silvertip into that handle, when i've given the omega a good try first.

For the black collet take a look at TGN and see their omega knots, looks to be part of the knot assembly.

My other thought, how does a 49 compare to the semogue 2000. just curious. my 49 is in red but the decal is long gone, it came loose while i was defunking it. i think now if i had it to do over again i doubt i would have tried to defunk it, just use it and let it leave on its own.

sure do like the 49 though. thanks for sharing!

Ah yes i see what you mean hmm i'll see what i can do about that i only need an extra 1mm so i may just ream it out with a drill or something.

Got my 49' today god she's big the pictures makes it look so small, i broke it in with all i had to hand some bicarb and lemon juice as we were all out of vinegar followed by lots of erasmic as i don't like that soap, when i saw the split ends i had a go with my eshave mandarin soap.

Crikey this brush doesn't mess about, i still prefer badger but the size, the backbone just eats through the soap and whips up a super rich lather in record time really caught me out by surprise.

I think i may actually keep this brush rather than rip it apart for the handle, i'll see if i can find one on ebay.

For an £8 brush it really has surprised me, nothing like a shavemac but very much a bargain, the size is great as well.

You can get a boat load of them for the price of one badger brush. That's a "unique advantages over a badger brush."

My only experience with boar is a low end HJM/Muehle and a VDH boar. I've been thinking about giving the pig another shot, and the 49 might be a good way to do that.

If all else fails, I love the handle. Re-knot, FTW!

Pumpkin, now you need a Pro 48. It's bigger, the only 28mm knot of the Omega hogs(I think). What's the Scottish sword that is 7 feet long? If the 49 is your favorite, get a 48, then a Semogue 2000(my favorites).
