Omega 48 Question

You know, I just kept using it until it broke in. It was very stiff at first and I thought it may stay that way, but one day, like magic, it became broken in and I experienced what a fantastic brush it is.

There are lots of threads on breaking in a boar brush, which I've recently been doing with an Omega 10065 (way smaller than the pro 48). Many of us have been reporting that the Omega's are arriving with minimal or no funky odor and that they work pretty well right out of the box. Some shavers say "just use it" every other day, and that the two-day use/dry cycle will cause the bristle ends to split, which is what you want. I took the following version of the many threads of advice: (1) initially rinse the brush in warm water and squeeze/swirl/shake dry; (2) apply a shampoo and let the brush soak for a few hours; (3) rinse and then lather the brush with a shaving soap or cream, set the brush on its handle, and let it sit overnight; (4) rinse the next morning; (5) start using every other day; and (6) if you want to speed up the ends-splitting process, swirl the tips of the wet brush on a towel as if face lathering. All of this may be overkill, but, in any case, I've enjoyed using the brush.

Some kind of pre-wash and a few test lathers to remove the funk should be all you need. I didn't have the patience to use it every other day or do any silly drying so I just used it every day and let it dry. It gets softer and more broken in over the first couple weeks/months. You'll be delighted after a few months of daily use, it just gets better.

I've stopped using my silvertip. I just like the feel of a broken in boar much better.

I got a Omega 49 not long ago. I just washed it in a shampoo once and let it dry. When I used it I thought it was great. Felt good and not much animal smell. I love the brush.

It is my experience that Omega boar brushes take less breaking-in time than some others. I would suggest using your brush straight away..... you will probably notice that it's performance improves over the first month or two.

I did a test lather straight away to see the amount of water that it holds and the next day I used it as normal. Mine had no particular boar smell that many other Omega brushes have. These, I leave them overnight soaked in a mix of water and lather. If the smell persists I do it another time.
But if you use the brush for two or three times you don't need to do anything, it starts to break in nicely. My Omega 48 and 49 are the best cost-to-value brushes I own and the best when it comes to soaps.

+1. All my Omegas broke in faster than Semouge 1438 did. My 49 was smelly, but it is my favorite brush. Make sure you soak your boar for some 5 minutes to soften it up and saturate with water. The 48 has slightly longer loft which I found to be too big to be comfortable for face lathering.

Thanks for all the replays, can't wait to get it. Should be here within the next couple of days

So I got this in yesterday and soaked it this morning, smell wasn't to bad. Dang, its big, face lathered with it and wow, loved this brush. I can only image that its going to get better and less stiff with use. The water seemed to run out of it and not hold but I imagine that will take care of itself.

Can't wait to see how nice it gets. It creates lather very nice.

hold your nose...mine broke in quick and worked great, but it stunk to high heaven for about a week
