Olive Oil as a Preshave

Does anyone use olive oil as a preshave? If so do you apply it to a wet/dry face, leave it on or wipe it off? How do you use it?

I don't use olive oil but there are some guys who have and I know the best thing is wash your face first because oil and dirt do not make a healthy mix next to a sharp blade. The oil will hold dirt on your face in suspension and just stir it around over a bigger area. For this same reason, you don;t want to leave oil on your skin after you shave because it acts like sticky paper to whatever is blowing around in the wind. It's supposed to be a softening agent when you rub it in good but don't leave it on. bc

I use sweet almond oil but you should probably apply the olive oil in the shower or while your face is wet. You should completely rub it into your face and then perhaps wet your face with hot water again after. The oil will help retain water better in your skin and therefore your skin will have more elasticity and will stay better hydrated. In the end, it will be less prone to nicks, cuts, and razor burn. :wink2:

I use olive oil mixed with a bit of castor oil. I wet my face with hot water pat dry, and apply a very little warmed olive/castor mix. Both these oils are kinda on the thick side, so if your skin has been warmed up with hot water and the oil has been warmed also the oil will spread better.

As mentioned, the oil is not meant to soften the beard but to protect the skin. Therefore you won't want to cut off beard softening preparation steps!

Just rub a few drops into the beard after you washed your face (so yes, the face has to be wet!). I slap on a hot towel after that for about a minute, followed by lathering directly on the skin as usual. Works great for me!

Never used it alone, however, it is an ingredient in Kiss My Face shave cream. Not sure if it's the olive oil of the other ingredients but KMF is great stuff! )

I combine two parts caster oil with one part olive oil. Added to the mix are a few drops of lavender essence. I put this on as the last thing I do while showering. I believe it helps keep my face hydrated while I dry off, mix my lather and get ready to shave.

After my shower I apply a dime size amount of EVOO before my first pass.

Repeat for the second.

I rarely get nicks or weepers now.

Plus it a great conditioner for the skin.

Another quick note,
If you are going to use Olive oil mixed with castor oil, I wouldn't recommend washing your face with another cleanser before as this mix of oils will already cleanse your face (because of the castor oil), and therefore, it wouldn't be logical to wash your face twice in a row.

I do a quick wash of my face at the sink , Apply olive oil & rub it in well with my finger tips ,then shower.

I've used it and it works, but the trouble and goopiness on razor post-shave made me give it up, and I'm getting great shaves without it.

I have a salt shaker full on my sink and use it in my pre-shave routine, sometimes after a shave, sometimes as a stand alone moisturiser, and sometimes mixed with other moisturising products.

All with great success.

I don't find it as good as skinfood as a pre-shave, but prefer it to T&H pre shave oil.
