Old style shaving mugs

I thought I'd call on the wisdom of the forum with regards to the old style shaving mugs like the picture below.

Do the modern soap sizes fit in the top? I assume you put hot water in the cup and put your brush in the spout end to soak and get warm and then take off some soap on the brush and face lather? Does anyone use one and how do they compare to using a scuttle? Can I also assume that it has no way of keeping the brush warm in between the 3 shaves? Any information or advise greatly appreciated.

Yes, most will.

That is correct.

These were used mostly because folks didn't have hot running water in the bathroom.
A scuttle will keep the brush and lather warm, but these old types are useful for face latherers who don't really worry about keeping the lather or brush warm.

I've been thinking about getting one of these mostly for the "cool" factor. Some of these things are collectables in their own right so beware that you may develop a new AD!

One question if I may, how do you stop the puck from moving round and round when trying to load the brush? Ah... maybe if you filled the scuttle by pouring the hot water over the soap?

I can't speak for the folks who used them when they were new, but I put the puck on and left it there. Just like in any bowl or mug, it sort of "glues" itself to the scuttle after a few uses.

I would think pouring water over the puck would waste soap and would be more likely to wash away any sticking that the soap is starting to make to the scuttle.

Don't use a circular motion. Use a back and forth motion instead, like drawing a letter "M" on the puck.

You could grate it and then pack it, if it isn't the right size.
