Old Spice Shaving Mugs

Hi So im thinking of buying an Old Spice mug off the bay and was wondering if anyone can tell me which "era" is best in terms of looks and performance on your counter. There seems to be some differences in styles throughout the decades. Some with lip some without. some with 2 ships some with one. Its hard to really tell when looking at just pics which ones look nicest.

Thanks

You can find mugs from all the eras in excellent condition if you are patient.

This web-site will help you identify them: http://www.oldspicecollectibles.com/

I just acquired this rare blue one today.

Ditto. I got a lot of good info from that site. I find myself liking the earlier pottery models. Not to keen on the earlier glass ones though. Oh and nice score on that mug and brush. I would love to be able to find those.

Its personal preference to which one you like. The late glass mugs are a tad shorter than the early ones which could make it easier to load the brush when you get to the bottom of the puck.

Ahh I didn't know they were shorter. The website above doesn't mention any changes in height.

I like the way they look but with my BK8 they're a bit small to build lather in. I bought one in good shape off the BST and just picked one with a ship design I liked. Right now it just sits with my shaving stuff and holds any odds or ends. Someday I will get another, smaller brush and maybe it will work better for me. It looks good just sitting there though.

Hint, they are really sturdy. I accidentally dropped it the other day and while it was falling I could see it breaking into a thousand pieces. It hit the floor next to the stool and left a dent in the linoleum. Not a scratch on the mug. Now every time I go in there I see the dent and smile.

Sweet! Does that one have ribs at the bottom to help hold the soap like the other mugs do?

The blue ones that I have do not have any ribs in the bottom and they are larger than the milk glass mugs. I can only speak for the ones that I have, however. There may be some out there that do have ribs.

Accurate measurements are given on the site, check the links for each type of mug.

The shorter ones are better for loading (as stated above) and the taller are better for building a lather ... the Hull Pottery mugs are more fragile. Any will be a great addition to the shave den.

I found this at a local 2nd hand shop for $30.
The website linked above states "Early Glass Mug 02 is identical in all respects to Early Glass Mug 01 except for the inclusion of small ribs around the inside of the mug bottom to hold the soap in place! The first model had three ribs, followed rather quickly, I believe, by the six ribbed model." So this is by my estimate an early 1950's mug with three ribs.

I like any of the short ones, those produced from the early 60's until Proctor and Gamble quite producing them in about 1992. They are essentially the same shape and size, which is perfect for all but the largest of brushes. The graphic's on any of them is fine, but you may have a preference.

There are so many of them on ebay that I don't bother with auctions and only look over the Buy-It-Now listings. If you have some patience you can score a good buy. I currently have two in my collection and have given two away as gifts. When I have provided them as gifts, I have them shipped directly to the giftee.

Don't be afraid to look at the ones from the Canadian market too. They include markings for the size of the soap puck and English/French labeling.

"Performance on your counter"? What does that mean?

Just look for one that catches your eye.

Bad choice of words. I meant performance such as lathering/loading etc since some have sloping sides, some straight, some with lip some without.

The hull pottery mugs are very unique and rare. If you can find one get it. The blue mugs are also very rare and sometimes command a high price.
