Old Spice Pure Sport Cologne Substitute?

Hi all,

I'm looking for something that smells very similar to OS Pure Sport Cologne.

I got the aftershave splash and am in love with the scent. Unfortunately, the cologne has been discontinued and is hard to find. So, I'm looking for a substitute moving forward. I figure it's a sport, marine, acquatic type scent, which I usually don't like...actually I only don't like it if it's fruity. Mix some spice with the acquatic, and you've got a winner in my book. So, I've done some research, and here are the nearest colognes I can find. However, I have no smell experience. So, any recommendations about this list - preferences, additions, subtractions?

Allure Sport by Chanel
TOBS Eton College (?)
Bvlgari Acqua
Polo Sport

It's a short list...

What a shame. I just came across this A/S and if it smells anything like the Eton College shaving cream, we have a winner in my books! It's still listed on the official Old Spice website, but I can't find it anywhere online either. :confused1

In regards to your list, here are my thoughts:

Allure Sport by Chanel - Don't be lured in by the Chanel brand name. Although they have released some fantastic classics (ie. vintage Anteaus), the whole "Allure" series of colognes is (IMO) just Chanel's way of cashing in on the flourishing young men's cologne market. I think this is a classic example of where flankers spell nothing but trouble, unless of course you are one of the young, wealthy gentlemen that Chanel seems to be targeting.
TOBS Eton College - I have not had the opportunity to smell this one, however, if it's anything like the shaving cream I think it's definately something to consider. Fantastic price too!
Bvlgari Acqua - It's okay I suppose, but if you're looking for some spiceyness I think you will be dissapointed. Bvlgari is well known for it's rather transparent skin scents which are often very weak and inoffensive (but widely appealing).
Polo Sport - Haven't tried this one, but I hear it's fairly fruity (pineapple?) so I'm not quite sure it'd be something you are looking for.

Some of my recommendations of colognes to try:
Gucci Pour Homme II
Cartier Declaration Essence
YSL M7 Fresh
Zara Vetiver
Canali Style
Polo Modern Reserve
Art of Shaving Sandalwood

Man! What a great response. Thank you so much Warlandsboy! I will try some of your recommendations and let you know. This is why I love this site so much - nothing but great advice from friendly folks! What's not to like?

By the way, I think I may have found one answer to my OS Pure Sport conundrum. Gary over at the Shoebox ShaveShop has started carrying this new cologne called JAKE'S, which is described as a "masculine, very fresh marine sport scent". Better yet, it's made by the makers of JM Frasers and Boosters. And best of all, it's only $11.99!!!! I will let you know if it fills in the OS gap after I try it.

Concerning your post, I have nothing against expensive colgones...if they merit the price. But, like you, the TRUE gold standard in colognes, or any product in wet shaving in general, is if you can find an outstanding product for pennies on the dollar, hence my love of OS Pure Sport...and hopefully Jakes.

Case in point: at the height of my acquisition disorder, I dropped about $150 on a bottle of Serge Lutens Fumerie Turque. Now, that's GREAT juice. But, I'm kicking myself because I recently found out that there is a GREAT cologne called Mustang, which features the note of pipe tobacco (which is what I love so much about Fumerie Turque), for about the fifth of the price!!!!! I'm kicking myself!!!!! : ) Oh well, part of the fun of wetshaving is learning from your mistakes through the journey. Cheers!

Just wanted to follow up on my previous post as promised. JAKE'S by Booster's is a great, great sport cologne. For the price, it's fantastic. It's not spicy like Pure Sport was, but it definitely has the fresh marine smell I like on occassion. I figure after applying it, I can just add a dash of Old Spice original cologne to it, and voila, what I get is somewhere between Pure Sport and Trafalgar!!!!! :thumbup1:
