What's new

Old Spice Alternatives

I used Old Spice bar soap in the shower for probably 2years 20+ years ago. It was good stuff.

I got a new synthetic brush in a few weeks ago and wanted to wash it just to remove any manufacturing dust. I grabbed the bar of Irish Spring from the shower to use. I was amazed by the lather. It was much better than many shaving soaps. I didn't use it though since it has a reputation for being drying.

I found another alternative for Old Spice, but it is a cream, not a soap. I understand it is current production in India. Interestingly enough the scent is closer to the bar Old Spice Bar Soap found at The Dollar Tree than it is to the soap I made using Old Spice Body Wash mixed with a melt and pour shaving soap. Test lathered it tonight. I'll shave with it in the morning.

I’ve used that for a few years. Amazon often has it for anywhere from $3 to $5 a tube. They have multiple scents ( plain, musk, and lime ). It is a great performer and at the price point it has great cost/performance value. I don’t think the scent is very classic Old Spice-ish but it is at least pleasant.

I’m fact I’ve been using the OS cream in our April Frugal Follies challenge. Mixed up a batch this morning ( face lathering so it’s a little wet and unstructured on the brush ). Fantastic performer for a value product.

For those that want a shaving soap that smells like the aftershave lotion, here are a couple of alternatives.

Old Spice Original Scent Body Wash will provide the scent to Bramble Berry Melt and Pour Shaving Soap Base. I use 4 oz of shaving soap base to 3 Tablespoons of Body Wash. That's a 1/4 lb of soap base, or 1/4 of the pound package pictured. Chop the soap base into large chunks and heat it in the mug you are going to use it in with a 30 second or so microwave blast. While it is liquid, pour in the body wash and stir it in. It will harden in about a half hour or so and is ready to use.

The Bramble Berry Shaving Soap Base creates a very high quality vege based shaving soap. It lathers very well and provides a nice comfortable shave. I have used it for several other home made concoctions including other body wash scents. The body wash doesn't diminish the properties of the base soap at all. The scent is strong and is a perfect match to Proctor and Gambles current Old Spice After Shave.

I found the bottle on the left a couple of years ago on the clearance shelf at the grocery store. My wife recently found the one on the right on Amazon.

Next is an Old Spice Bath Bar found in a Dollar Tree store. I bought it while traveling in Iowa. When I got it home my wife giggled because she bought some at the local Dollar Store in Southern California. I suspect it will be readily available for a while. I'm going to stock up as it is both a great bath soap and a great shaving soap.

I test lathered it with a small Finest Badger brush while holding the bar in my hand. I was shocked at how easily it lathered and the quality of the lather. It is not labeled as a shaving soap, but it truly reminds me of my NOS Vintage Old Spice Shaving Soap. It lathers as easy and provides the rich creamy feel of the original. I have shaved with it several times in the past week and I'm thinking of shreding it and puching it into a mug. It is also strongly scented and matches the current scent of Old Spice After Shave.

It has been many years since I used a fresh puck of the original, but I remember it being milder in scent to the after shave. Both of these presented here are full strength. I did shave with the Vintage stuff this morning to compare it with these two before posting.

Anyway, I'm excited to present both to those who want to enjoy something very close to the original scent when you shave.
Your bar soap is labeled "Sport", which is supposed to be a different scent than "Classic".

A whole slew of Old Spice Scents, which appear to be aimed directly at the Axe crowd:

Krakengard
Night Panther
Wolfthorn
Dragonblast
Mamba King
Oasis
Wilderness
Timber
Deep Sea
Aqua Reef
Hawk Ridge
Fox Crest
Matterhorn
Fiji
Cyprus
Denali
Captain
Grassland
Bear Glove
Belize
Citron
Amber
Dynasty
Sea Sray
Volcano
Mountain Peak
Royalty
Canyon
Clear Harbor
Clean Waters
Exfoliate
Relax
Moisturize
Hydrate
Below Deck

I'm sure I missed some. Can't find Classic though.
Not enough guys that don't think it smells like "old man" to keep it viable I suppose.

The little "sport" marking has been somewhat blurred on every bar I have purchased. Another poster called it to my attention. I'm old enough that I shaved with the original when younger when it was still produced and sold. What I don't remember for certain is if that original soap was a strongly scented at the after shave (my favorite back then), but my recollection is that it was the same profile but milder. My NOS of the original is much less scented, probably due to old age, so comparison to it isn't viable.

My perception is that this new soap, labeled "sport" is reasonably similar to the original. The character of the soap seems very close to the original though. Somewhat softer than a hard milled soap and very easy to build lather.

The soap I made using Bramble Berry Melt & Pour with Old Spice Original Bath Gel is much more strongly scented, and seems stronger that my remembrance of the original soap. It is wonderful too although the character of the soap is very different.

Unfortunately the bath gel seems to now be discontinued too. I'm glad I have two bottles.

Someone on B&B posted that Stirling discontinued their version of Old Spice soap because the vendor that provides the scent raised the price beyond being economically viable. I wonder if Proctor and Gamble has faced a similar issue.

I shave with the Old Spice "Sport" soap this morning and still find it delightful and to me reminiscent to the original. YMMV

Necro-thread. 😄😄😄

Can this soap base be mixed with the current drugstore version of Old Spice aftershave to create a "Classic" scented shaving soap?

Possibly. You would need to experiment. I have used soap and candle fragrances with the melt and pour base with usually good results. My only concern is that I have not had consistent results with after shave. I wonder if it is the alcohol content. Anyway, it is worth a try.

As a follow-up, it appears that the Old Spice bar soap is no longer available at the Dollar Store. I have not found it in the last few months. I'm glad a grabbed a few bars before it was gone.

It looks like my last post was premature. I found Old Spice Sport Bar Soap at the Dollar Tree store today in Schertz, Texas. It is different though. The individual box was wrapped in clear plastic and the bar is a light green and rectangular shaped. The scent seems about the same but I'll need to compare when I get home. It still lathers very easy and is very slick. I'll shave with it tomorrow morning.

Shaving follow-up after returning home confirms that the scent is the same and it shaves the same. Wrapping the box in a plastic wrapper likely helps it hold the scent better. You can't smell it until the wrapper is removed. I kind of wonder why they felt the need to add green coloring to it.
