Old school honing - how did they do it (& a experiment w/ sandstone)

For those that know about tormek, or rotating stones in general also might know that you sometimes have to true the stone, either with another stone or that diamond tool that makes everything flat and nice.
I tried mixing the residue from a tormek stone with beeswax and impregnated a piece of leather with a hot iron. Works surprisingly good.
Perhaps those guys back in the day used pulverized stone and wax and heat. To marinate leather or that amadoju/German felt stuff. If I was where I'm at now, but 150 years ago, wouldn't know how to make a pasty thing.
But there would still be stones and beeswax and iron around.
How do one make a paste anyway?
 
Or rather, if one where to make a paste 100-150 years ago, like suggested earlier in the thread(like ten years ago, I know...) how would they go about making a paste?
