First day back in the gym in 4 /12 months thanks to the state of emergency. I did a reset to 60% of what I was doing before the lock down I don't remember squatting 225lbs x5 ever being so sucky. But I was still in the gym training so it's all good

Yesterday was my birthday. My wife bought me a massage session with our masseuse which was scheduled for the morning and was heavenly. Didn't sleep well the night before and laid down for a nap. Then my mind was doing everything possible to avoid a ride. Finally, I mustered up the motivation to get my act together and head out in the 93 degree F heat. Incredibly since it was mid afternoon, the sun was at an angle that created lots of shadows from the many trees in the area and the temps as I rode through the portion of my route that goes through a 2,000 acre park were delightfully cool. I was able to do 21 miles and for about the third time I clocked at just over 12 mph average speed. Just knowing that I am showing some increased strength made me feel good. And of course the ride itself was also very nice. It always clears my head a bit during these stressful times. I'll say that I was probably covered in much more sweat than I have from any previous ride thus far this summer and I needed every bit of water that my two water bottles hold. And it felt good. Afterwards I took a nice long shower and treated myself to a leisurely shave before heading out to dinner with my wife and son at a local favorite restaurant that has set up a large tent outside with seating spread very far apart and all staff wearing masks. I had some tuna sashimi with noodles and seaweed salad as well as a deliciously creamy ricotta cheese mixed with pistachios and olive oil over some toasted rustica bread. It took them a bit to fix the less than sashimi grade tuna they tried serving me at first. My wife had ordered the same thing and her's was very different. No fat veins at all. Mine had lots of them. So I returned it. They made it right. And I allowed myself a Vesper Martini, 3 parts Bombay Sapphire, 1 part Ketel One, 1/2 part Lillet Blanc, served chilled straight up with a lemon twist. My favorite summer beverage this year. And this morning I woke up to find that a Franklin Toiletry antique barbershop lather bowl in cobalt blue that I found on the e of the bay which wasn't supposed to be delivered until Saturday is now out for delivery this morning (Thursday). All in all, it was a good day to start my 58th year.

CONGRATULATIONS!! :a29:

Hot Yoga!

The room was hot but there was a smokin' hot, 20 something Asian gal who set up in front of me. As I chatted her up on the way to the parking lot she popped the trunk on a Cadilac CTS, got in and drove away.

The secret is out...yoga classes are loaded with beautiful women.

Since about the middle of May I've been going to our neighborhood outdoor swimming pool just about every day. It's not fancy at all but just a pretty large and pretty old pool anybody can join. It's seldom remotely crowded. Sometimes it's a bit crowded for swimming my laps but there are loads of good exercises to be had in a pool.

I never feel or believe I have reason to feel afraid of the virus there. There is some social distancing and a good bit of attention paid to cleaning at appropriate and frequent intervals.

Half an hour is my minimum, but I'm more likely to stay moving in the pool for about an hour. Swimming, walking, treading water, and all sorts of other movements occupy my time. Any movement against the resistance of the water counts in my view of it.

I truly love being in the water + I get to talk a bit with (usually) old ladies, and play with the children a bit sometimes, and watch kids dive off the diving board, some of them being pretty good at it, and also talk with and look at the lifeguards one of whom is barely sixteen but both very nice and very nice to look at. She also a fabulous diver (and doesn't even know it).

I wouldn't say she looks eighteen to me.

It's not a hot yoga class but it will do for summertime exercise.

The major benefits are both physical and mental. I can relax in the pool to a degree impossible elsewhere. It also allows me to forget that Western Civilization seems to be on the precipice. My hips hurt when I walk very far at all, which really limits me, and I have all sorts of aches and pains, but nothing hurts in the water. I feel so much better when I spend a good bit of time moving in the water.

I'm not by any means a fast swimmer, but I am a Total Immersion trained swimmer, and, even before that, a skilled enough swimmer to get by in most settings. Gliding though the water feels so good. Even better is gliding overlaid with power strokes which I sometimes play with because it's occasionally fun to increase the speed and because I like to intermittently up my power output.

Over the now two and a half months of daily pool visits I've gotten in somewhat better shape, too, not that I'm not still fat, old, and way out of shape. Still, all progress is good.

A few times weather has prevented my pool time, but it's not been a bad summer here for late afternoon thunderstorm (some summers they're a big inconvenience for after work swimmers).

Happy shaves and happy workouts to you,

Jim

The salt water pool I used to take my daughter to when she was a kid had a high diving board and a twisty slide. It was always entertaining to watch the kids come out of the slide and high drama watching them on the high dive, especially those who were afraid of heights!

Great images brought to mind by your memories.

The pool I use now had a high dive at one time, before I joined I think; not now.

The pool I went to as an eight year old had a high dive (maybe all pools did back then). It was a rite of passage to jump or dive from that height. I recall being very afraid.

I no longer dive even off the low board, but I used to. It's terrific fun to learn and practice the flips and such. Most aren't as hard to do as they look, but all are terribly hard to perfect (not that I ever did).

As a kid I remember many times going to a spring (Radium Springs) which had an incredibly high slide, not twisty, which wasn't at all scary because it started at what seemed to be ground level (the ground being the floor of the building and terraces surrounding much of the spring) and went down into the water. Great fun it was. The water of the spring was cold cold cold. Mostly only children went in the water and we all had blue lips.

I'm unable to locate many photos of the historic Radium Springs the casino and terraces of which have been torn down. One can no longer swim there which is a tragedy. I'm not the only one who misses it.

Happy shaves,

Jim
