What's new

old brush?

I recently acquired an old shaving mug at an antique store. The mug had a duck on it, and as an avid (maybe rabid:001_rolle) duck hunter i couldn't pass up the chance. For 10 bucks they threw in a free brush.

Its in pretty rough shape. do you think i can shave with it as it is? What about an old brush with that much hair would make it unshaveable? and since i plan on eventually redoing it (why not:tongue_sm) is there somewhere on here that explains things like the significance of loft etc.

fyi sorry the pictures crappy but it says "Barbershop" and "pure badger"

Hello,

Why not get yourself a new knot from The Golden Nib?
So much nicer.

Maybe make some small adjustments to your liking; a bit smaller, a bit more loft - whatever you like is fine!

The handle just needs a good grinding an some lacquering.

I think it could be a nice one!

(It looks like my Vero and I really dig that one!)

Pics of the mug please... I'm a rabid duck hunter myself. :thumbup1:

I think once you start carving your own decoys that qualifies you as rabid.

The swan was a massive project!

Waterfowling is a particular interest of mine as well.:thumbup1:

That is very impressive. Glad to see a quack addiction worse than mine (a swan!?! good jesus you need help:lol:) my project this year is making a floating blind. no fixed structures allowed on our lake...

I actually shaved with the brush: soft is an understatement. its damn near malleable. actually it is, but with no rebound. Lathered pretty well though once i got used to how much water it holds. I definitely plan on re-knotting it now. any ideas for a color scheme? I don't really know what to do with the top...

pics of the mug on the way

I've never been as cold or miserable as hunting ducks on the eastern shore. Using a john boat to break the ice, getting in to push the sheets of ice out of the way so we could lay out the decoys. Followed by loading the shotgun and sitting there as the birds flew riding a 60 mph tail wind. It's a wonder why I prefer sporting clays and dove.

Please post the mug, I would like to see it.

Take a top down picture of the knot. Don't reknot it unless the knot is trashed. If the knot is decent and you still don't want it I may be willing to send you a better condition handle in trade for it as I'm on a vintage badger brush kick at the moment.

That's what I love about it. The first time I ever went our 17 foot metal skiff almost sank in the 5/6 foot swells from a noreaster ( in only 10 feet of water), and the last day of the most recent season was the biggest snow storm in a decade, and I had 3 inches on top of me by the end of the day. I ddidnt shoot a single bird either time:lol:

The mug isn't actually that old, 1985.

And the top of the brush...

i did it for the second time and lost maybe one hair. However, soft seems like an understatement. Maybe its cause i'm used to a boar brush, but its almost too soft. Is it normal to be able too feel the handle through the brush:tongue_sm

and with that metal ring on the mug, do you think it'd be safe to microwave it? i made some Van Der Spice for it, melting it in another bowl, but i want to add more old spice to it

That's what I figured. I ended up using the mug as a double boiler and put tons of rite aid knockoff OS in. It smells great now:thumbup:

I really like the duck and swan decoys! One question.... how well do they lather?:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: I bet they are a little scritchy on the face too!:biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1:
