What's new

OK, what's next

I've been working my way through a bullgoose sampler pack supplemented with some blades I have been given. So far I have used the Derbys and the Crystals. The Derby's felt dull, pulled a bit at my face and gave me more nicks that I think I deserved. The Crystals were an improvement, but after a 3 pass shave this morning (1x WTG/ 2x XTG) and an ATG touch up on neck and cheeks, I am unimpressed. Definitely a DFS, but with the amount of effort I put in it should be better -- I have gotten at least as good with Wallyworld Personnas. So I move on, what do you guys think I should try next? I was thinking of skipping the Dorcos based on the reviews, perhaps the Astras, 7 O'clocks or the Red pack Personnas?

Crystal Platinum Chrome
Dorco 301
Super Iridium
Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge
Astra Superior Platinum
Derby Extra
Feather Hi-Stainless
Lord Super Stainless
Shark Super Chrome
Wilkinson Sword Classic
Zorrik Super Stainless
Personna Red Pack
Bluebird Hi-Stainless Platinum

I've definitely had better luck of late with the red Personnas over the Derby Extras so I'll second the recommendation.

I would try the Astras and then the Feathers. Those are the ones that work best for me. The 7 o'clocks are only a slight improvement over Derby's (IMO) and the Red Personnas are only slightly better than the Crystals. As always, YMMV.

Could it be that you need a different razor?
This could be, but I'm getting absolutely parallel results with a RedTip SS, and a Fatboy set to 3. Another razor may change things, but considering what I am using is well regarded, I think I'll make blade choice the single variable in this experiment for the time being. Anyways, don't goad me into RAD, I'm not that strong.

Of the blades on your list, I like the 7 o'clock yellows and the Wilkie Classics the best. (Although I am also a fan of the Derbys which, apparently, did not work for you.) I know that the Feathers get a lot of love around here, but I have always found that they leave my face a little irritated. As for the RPIP's, my experience was the same as yours was with the Crystals -- smooth enough, but not close enough for the effort put in.

Good luck, and enjoy the shaves!

Don't do anything based on the reviews. I say go ahead and try the Dorco's. After all, it's the people who loved the Crystals and Derbies who hate the Dorco's, right?

YMMV!

I have not tried a blade sharper than a Feather. There is a dark side though, as they are more prone to give me nicks and weepers. I have compromised on Derby's for now, but once my supply is used up I need to try Feathers again. I have also used the Red Personnas and Crystal blades, and found them useless.

I'm kind of hit and miss on the sample packs, but so far for me the Astra's have been the best shave. Of course I still have a lot of others left to try. :001_rolle :tongue_sm   :001_tt2:

The feathers are really sharp but they might be a bit too sharp for a more agressive razor like a red tip or the higher settings on your fatboy. Try the Personnas and Astras. They're almost as sharp but a bit smoother and more forgiving of harsher razors, pressure and poor technique.
Work your way up to the feathers rather than just jumping straight in.
