I've been DE shaving now for 6 months and have always wanted to try a straight so I ordered a Feather AC with professional blades a couple weeks ago while under the influence too many manhattans. Though I've spent about the same amount of money on Feather's AC than I would have on an entry level Dovo, I did not like the idea that I might try it and not like it and have a beautiful piece of German steel laying around in my steamy bathroom. My father gave me a Puma folding knife for hunting when I was a teenager and taught me to sharpen it until I could shave the hair off my arm. The key he taught me was stropping after using the stones. I now use it mostly for slashing homemade bread before baking. My vegan friends have no idea what this knife has been through in its life.
This description above describing the AC with professional blades has now scared the **** out of me! It seems that I'd be better off with a traditional straight. He says the 5/8" half-hollow is good for begginers but they'd soon "outgrow" it if you will. I started DE shaving with Feather blades and love them, though some don't recommend them for beginners. I'm now thinking of getting a 5/8" full-hollow Dovo to start out with before attempting the AC.
Thoughts?
