Ogallala Benefits from aging

So I purchased the bonanza pack from Ogallala about a year ago. When I first got it, it was OK, but it didn't really stand out from other bay rums I had. Well, about a week ago, I was on my bay rum soap rotation and I decided to give them another chance. The scents were outstanding, especially the Sage & Cedar. I thought maybe I overlooked this gem.

So this time, I ordered a large bottle of Sage & Cedar and opened it. To my disappointment, it was rather pungent. I could smell the fresh EO oils, and it's a scent I don't care for. I previously made bay rum on my own and dumped most of it out because I didn't like the scent. I reopened an old bottle I kept and it smelled nice. So, I'm beginning to think that EO scented aftershaves need at least 8-12 months before they really mature.

I'm not sure what others' experiences are, so I'm just throwing this out there to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with EO aftershaves and Ogallala.

I don't get the same smell directly from the bottle as I get wearing it. Also, which you probably already know, Ogallala needs a good shaking. But the aging theory is an interesting one.....I wonder.

Add to that you are also looking at a difference between a plastic sample bottle and a glass bottle for the full sized. The difference in materials can also make a difference.

When I made my bay rum, I stored it in glass mason jars. I notice an improvement after 3 months and it just kept getting better and better. With the sample sage and cedar I have, I'm picking up a sweeter, almost vanilla-like note that's not present in the new bottle. Since it will probably several months until bay rum is up in the rotation, hopefully the large bottle will have matured by then.
