What's new

Odd observations.

I recently acquired gold Sheraton from eBay. Well, this thing was in rough shape. Rust, gunk, and this mysterious black funk. I've cleaned it to near sanitation (limited supplies and time here in Afghanistan). I noticed a strange feature/quirk when I played with it.

Whenever the silo doors are completely shut, and the TTO knob is as tight as it should be, the doors still have a tad bit of play. This 'wiggle' is causing me concern. Would this affect my shave in any way? Would the blade have more wiggle room than another TTO such as a Super Speed, Fatboy, Slim, or Ranger Tech? Any theories, experiences, or thoughts are welcome.

EDIT:
I know WHY it does this. It's because of the early TTO design, the center notch that secures the blade stops underneath the doors instead of just above them. Also, it should be noted that the notch is completely different from Ranger Tech's/Early 40's SS or late 40's SS/Flare Tips.

Wow, nearly a half hour since I posted this and no answers. Hello? Guido? Luc? Jim? ANYBODY?!???

Maybe I'm just babbling about nothing then....who knows?

Do the doors wiggle when there is a blade inserted? If so, this would be a cause for concern as I wouldn't want the blade moving as I shaved.

I haven't used this yet, mainly because I just cleaned it and partially because I'm sending it out be replated. Although I have set a blade in it, and it didn't seem to wiggle at all. I'm just curious to see what others' experiences with this may have been.

Interestingly, I have what I believe is also a Sheraton that I got in a lot of razors off of ebay, and just finished cleaning it this evening. After reading your post, I loaded a blade, and there is no play in the silo doors. But the center notch in mine comes up between the silo doors. Does yours look like it's supposed to stop short?

Yep, it sure does. It looks like it was designed that way, because there isn't even a 'slot' for the notch to get between the silo doors.

I don't know, JimBow, but it seems odd to me that the doors would wiggle when closed tight. I'd still be a little concerned that the blade might slip when using it, since the doors hold the blade down. It doesn't seem like it would take much of a slip in the blade to cause a problem? If you decide to shave with it, let know how it performs. Good luck!

Yes, the Sheraton had an early version of the TTO technology. It wasn't as well refined. But that said, the proper fit should still be stable. You may have a slight bend in the mechanism that is not allowing a tight closing fit. Perhaps you can patiently open an close slowly until you ca identify the flawed area. It would probably only take a gentle adjustment to bring it back to full functionality.

What Guido said!

I would have a look to see if the blade wiggle when closed. If it's rock solid then I wouldn't worry much but looking at an adjustment might be worthy!
