I neglected to take a picture of the top, but the cap is solid, like a Old Type or a New Improved, which would indicate the short bullets come down from the cap, rather than up from the base plate, or that there is a recessed area under the top cap which doesn't go all the way through the cap.
Or it could be a Gillette handle and base plate with a re-purposed cap from some other brand.

you are right, but the baseplate looks for me like model "B" in this older thread

And we can see a little bit the patent numbers in your picture
Yes, it does to me too. I'm wondering if someone mated the "B" style guard plate there with a "D" style cap...
Phil, was that at the Antique mall in Gurnee? I have good luck with wild finds at the Lake County and Wolf's Flea Markets.
Nope, that was Volo.
I normally rotate between Volo, Gurnee, and two different ones on Route 50 in Bristol, WI
Haven't been to Lake County or Wolf's, I've been to the seven mile flea market, but you can't even call that a flea market, it's a retail outlet for newly packaged cheap garbage.
Nice, I have rarely seen anything at Volo, sadly most of the flea markets have become like that, but at least with Wolf's the still have a few small antique dealers that are always bringing in finds. I need to make more McHenry and Kane County runs as last time was good hunting.
