OCtober 2024 — Opening Our Hearts; and Combs; to Happy Razor Fun Time

One current razor maker insists in their promotional material that the open comb design is inherently superior to the solid safety bar and was (largely) abandoned only due to manufacturing cost concerns. A vast oversimplification, no doubt, but there may be a grain of truth in there somewhere.

This interesting two-piece open comb was, I understand, made for and sold through Rexall drugstores, probably in the 1930s/40s. Unusually the entire handle length unscrews to release the top cap.

It's a wonderfully well balanced razor weighing 54 grams and it offers a fantastically smooth, mild yet effective shave. Excellent plating over some sort of lightweight alloy, but so well manufactured that it looks like it could have been made yesterday. A great shave and an absolute pleasure to use.

I have read that the principal reason the Gillette Tech was developed to replace the NEW was that the baseplate could be stamped rather than machined, thus saving a lot of money. There was a slight overlap in production, but only about a year or so in the USA. The Tech sold for $0.49, and the NEW sold for about a dollar.

However, I don't know if that same rationale extended to the Gillette TTOs also moving from OC to SB in 1940.

In general, Gillette's design arc over the 20th century was to make their razors milder at the expense of efficiency. In a time where most men didn't put in the effort to prep their faces like many of us here do, that's understandable.

For me, my OCs typically shave better than my SBs. The closest comparison is my 1934 Aristocrat OC versus my 1946 Aristocrat SB, because the designs are so similar apart from the comb/bar. The '34 shaves slightly closer than the '46, although the difference is not that significant. A bigger difference is actually the '46 versus my '48-50 Aristocrat, where Gillette redesigned the safety bar.

It seems to have come full circle with the hobbyists/enthusiasts, not only with the partial return of open combs, but with more aggressive designs in general. Meanwhile, today's Gillette wants to make shaving as mindless and automatic as possible.
