What's new

Obsession

The only fragrance SWMBO ever bought for me is Obsession. After 17 years the bottle she bought for me as a wedding present is empty and I'm not sad to see it gone. Nothing I really care for. Is there something similar that doesn't smell like 1980's nightclub that she may accept or do I have to just bite the bullet and do another 17 years?

LOL

17 years of Obsession wold be like a personal hell for me. Do you know that she really loves it on you?

What else have you been wearing? Must be something because I doubt that a bottle of Obsession would last 17 years on its own.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
i think if i didn't like it i'd just wear it all the time and a lot of it so it would disappear faster. then say something like "yeah i loved that stuff, but how bout something new"

* i am single, never married *

Step up with a couple of options from Chanel. The original Egoiste (not Platinum) keeps you in the Oriental realm of Obsession. Chanel Allure PH is less oriental, closer to fougere but still with an ambery dry down. Both are less linear than obsession and much less synthetic.

Maybe SWMBO knew you haven't been particularly interested in trying different frags? It might be a good idea to let her know you'd like to try to find something new and you'd like her input, then get some samples to try and see if she likes them on you, too.

That is all. I just don't use it very often...anniversary, her birthday, Christmas, weddings and funerals.

Vera Wang maybe? Smells like Obsession to me but I liked Obsession better and got it. Started with Givenchy Gentleman this morning; nice patchouli. Or both of you go out and start sampling; make it an adventure!

She really loves it. She also mentioned Drakkar which does nothing form me.

Wow, let's get you both out of the 80s. Okay, since you clearly only wear scent for her on special occasions, something you both like is the goal. I'm concerned the current crop of department store offerings are a giant leap away from 80s type scents that may shock you guys. Scents now are lighter, fruitier, sweeter mostly.

I like the Egoiste suggestion. Though from 1990, it's a classic that may work. While many of us (and you) loathe Obsession, there are many women who like it. Obsession has a heavy amber vibe to it. Lutens Ambre Sultan is a very sensual scent much more refined than Obsession. Prada Amber is a modern take on it with a bit of a soapy vibe. Tauers L'Air du Desert Marocain another amber prominent scent. Some of these are pricey, but since one bottle will last you until 2020 or so, it's not going to be an ongoing expense.

Every scent is YMMV, so sample anything first and see what she thinks too. Part of what I see is that she may not have been exposed to many scents for 17 years or so. Since selection in easternKY is probably pretty limited at the brick and mortar level, use some of the decanters to buy small samples.

I like the Bois du Portugal recommendation, but you would have to be prepared to drop some serious coin. I think Obession fans would really enjoy this one which is a huge step up in terms of quality but still maintains that woody, spicy, manly feel. New York by Parfums de Nicolai is said to be a cheaper version of BdP, although I find it inferior in just about every way (many feel the exact opposite). It is significantly easier on the wallet than the Creed if that is a concern.

For something along the lines of Drakkar, I'd recommend Azzaro Pour Homme for something easy on the wallet, yet significantly better (still from the same era). Or, you could step it up a bit and go with something like Duc de Vervins by Houbigant which is a cleaned up more modernized version of the scent.

I'd say get a bottle of Caron 3rd Man. It smells infinitely better than Obsession, and it's probably a lot cheaper. If you only wear it a couple of times a year, I wouldn't bother buying anything too off the wall. It might even be better to go to Sephora with her and see what she likes. Even if she just picks something at random, the odds are it will smell a lot better than Obsession.
