After one year of wet shaving and approximately spending $900 on shaving supplies I have come to realization that I received just as good of a shave using my mach3 razor in half the time and less money (yes less money). I think the soap and the brush are good acquisitions. As far as the DE Razor and all the blades I really think DE Razor is just for nostalgia sake and there is nothing wrong with that. I have a few friends at work who tried the DE VS other Gillete products and 98% said they would rather shave with the mach 3 We had some old timers as well involved in our little experiment.

Does anyone share this same thoughts. I am going to save my money this year and stick with QED soaps and be done with it after all its only shaving. I would rather spend the money on my kids and wife and some people that need help. Seems like every time I log onto this board there is a new vendor that says they have a better soap. My advice save your money and do something good with it this holiday season.

Hey man, whatever floats your boat. If you happen to get a good shave with a cheese grater and some olive oil, go for it. There is nothing wrong with Mach 3's, etc. if they work for you. As for "save your money", it depends on the individual. Collecting soaps, creams, brushes, razors, etc. is kind of a hobby for me. I am lucky enough to be in a position in life where spending money on that stuff that doesn't impact my lifestyle. For others, it will be a different story. We should be careful about blanket statements, though. To each his own, after all. I hope you find the right balance for your life, Clark, and Happy Holidays!

I was actually driven to DEs because of the multi-blade cartridge razors and electrics, and the insufficient, sometimes awful shave I was getting with them. If it was just for novelty's sake, I wouldn't be posting on this thread. Each blade "shaving closer than the first" always tore my adam's apple and neck to pieces, and my skin couldn't handle multiple passes. Electrics couldn't catch some of the hair that grew in different directions around my neck and did not provide a close but instead mediocre shave. The time and money I dedicate now to shaving and shaving products is obviously greater (at least with soaps and creams- not blades!), but that is because it has become luxurious and I enjoy it and look forward to it. Sticking it to Gilette has just been a benefit.

But like everyone else, my testimony doesn't discount another's- to each his own. Go with what works best for you.

Clark,

While it may appear to be different on the surface, this forum is all about enjoying your shave experience, regardless of how you achieve it. As Scotto said, if you can get there with a cheese grater and olive oil, go for it. Even Don, the moderator over at The WetShavers Group uses a Mach 3. And if you look at the number of members here who post regularly vs. the number of members total, you'll see that most don't have the "obsession". For me, it is also a hobby and a chance to do something personal for myself. As far as doing for others this time of year, I have a tradition that I share with my children and have done so for thet past 20 years.

I hope you'll stick around and participate in the forum!

Clark, you don't have to spend a ton of money to be a member here. You can enjoy wetshaving by spending a minimum amount of money. I find that using a DE saves money in the long run. Consider what razor cartridges cost versus DE blades. You get about the same amount of shaves with a cartridge that you do with a DE razor whereas the DE razor are more cost effective. You can buy shave soap at Walmart for under 2 dollars. You can also spend under $5 for balm at Walmart.

I know some of us go overboard buying supplies and bragging about them. Nevertheless, this forum is really about the comraderie we enjoy with each other and our experiences.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

Mmmm.. Scotto, how about a cheese grater review? Clark, I find it unfortunate that you don't find DE shaving to be as good or better than the cartridge razors, but that's what makes horse racing. For me a day without a DE shave just isn't a good day.
As to your expenses, with a few shekels I have turned drudgery to joy with my collection of soaps and creams and balms and colognes and razors and brushes, but really I only needed one of each. But, it's cheaper than betting the ponies or chasing women (and maybe even catching one, perish the thought!). Good luck and good shaving.

Does anyone have a DE Cheese Grater? I cant seem to get the same closeness when I turn it over????
You are supposed to start with the coarse side for the first pass and switch to the fine pass for against the grain.:tongue_sm

Bravo! I watched my grandfather shave for years with an old DE and hand soap.
