numbers/lines on blades?

so I've noticed that some brands of blades have numbers on them and some have lines. what do these mean?

That is the # of shaves left on the blade.

They disappear one at a time as you use the blade

that would actually be cool if it were true. I'm always forgetting how many shaves I've got on a blade.

It is a manufacturing thing and nothing to do with the blade.

This is how I keep track of how many shaves remain on each of the blades I have unwrapped. The number on the paper corresponds to how many shaves is on the blade resting on that paper. This simple system has worked well for me

Great idea for an interactive shaving experience, turtle! That would be a handy feature.

I read once (on B&B, I think) that the markings are used for calibration of manufacturing equipment. Of course, that could be utter nonsense.

To identify blade orientation (front, rear, top and bottom) during manufacturing. The text and logos can be the same on each side.
 
I took out a SuperMax Platinum today and it has LINES and NUMBERS and WAX SPOTS. These will keep the archaeologists busy for a long time...
