number of laps

Got a Filly strop and dovo best quality razor. Roughly how many laps is enough/the optimun. Also is a lap to the top and then back?

Thanks

The number will vary from person to person. I do 25-30 on the linen, 50-60 on the leather. I just noted that you have a Filly strop with CrOx on the back. Just do 60 on the leather and use the CrOx to touch up as needed.

Yeah, some people do relatively few (and seem to require honing/touch ups more frequently), others do a lot.

Myself: 50 fabric, 50 latigo, 50 horse hide

I have a 3" SRD Bridle strop. I do 25 laps on the webbing side and then ~50 on the leather side. When I just used my little homemade practice strop I would do ~75 laps on it. I say around 50 b/c I usually lose count somewhere along the way and just keep going until I figure I'm there. :001_tongu

I typically do 30 on the fabric/synthetic & 60 on the leather followed by another 25 on the leather after the shave.

I would do 60 laps and a lap is the blade going up and then coming back down.

Generally I don't do a lot of laps, I guess I have a fast strop? I usually do 15-20 on my Irish Linen and 20-25 on my vintage Sanitary Select Strop. If you are curious about how much to strop try this: Before stroping test your razor on your arm hair. I test with the very fine hairs on the back of my upper arms. If you are hirsutically challenged just look for the hair on your arms that are the least dense. Run your razor over the tips of these hairs and see if it catches and pops the hair. If it does you won't need to strop much. If it doesn't strop until it does. I've never had a razor pass this test and not shave well.
