What's new

Now I know what you guys mean by quiet

Week three of shaving with my EJDE89. The first week I used Derbys. Good shave but not very comfortable and a lot of tug and pull. Week two I used Supermax. More comfortable, less tug and pull and a better shave. Today I started week three with Red Personna. I was a bit unnerved by how quiet it was. As I am still working on technique, I wasn't sure if the blade was on my face. Only when I went ATG did I hear a consistent chopping sound. In the end it was the most comfortable I have had so far.

I'm jealous. About 2 months into DE had this with an Astra. 6 months in now and haven't been able to get back there since. Do you find that cream choice makes a difference?

Right now all I am using is Mike's natural soap, so I can't speak to this.

I see DE shavers dividing into 2 camps: those who love Derbies and those who hate them. People with light beards love them. People with tougher beards hate them. You should try some of the sharper blades. For example Feather, Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge or Super Platinums, Voshkods. Anyone remember more sharp blades to recommend? I like Bic Platinums, they're sharper than Derbies.
I believe the sound from the blade is the blade vibrating, the effortless the cutting the lesser the blade sings.

I myself have a light beard and I HATE them. But I hate them for a good reason, I get the worst razor burn I have ever gotten with Derbys than any other blade I have tried. Soap makes no difference, neither does the razor. I have had even worse results than just razor burn, I had my face all chopped up and I looked like someone tried to give me a colombian necktie. I was in rough shape. I am actually scared of the things now.

I have a light beard and love Derby's/gillette 7's and I'm having an on/off affair with feathers. the best/loudest sound is when using my slant with any blade.

Had some Derbys hanging around after my first shave with them went so bad. Thought after the comments I would try again. super smooth and close shave, but nicks in places that never happen and just all around road rash that has not been shown with any other blade. I gave them two tries, but I'm done with them. Oddly enough they make about 2 good passes and the 3rd pass just munched my face.

Derby's are the blade I hate the most, It's not even about razor burn it's about the roughness of the shave. Even with the best prep they just feel rough, dull and pull and tug instead of cut. And this is with Proraso and an EJ89.
