What's new

Not sure what I have here- FWE

I have a straight razor here with FWE special stamped on it. It's pretty rusty. On the handle it has incomparable etched into it. I'm wondering if it was a good straight in its day and whether it'd be worth having it restored. It's got a couple of pinholes in the middle of the blade from pitting going all the way through so I'm not sure if it can even be repaired. Thanks for the help

That's an F.W. Engels Special. I have one and they're wonderful shavers...looks like you might have your work cut out for you on this one though!!

Thats the bad thing about those hollow grinds, that edge is real delicate and most are less than .010 thick, about as thick as a business card. Any rust or pitting near the edge can be terminal

Actually there is no difference in the edge of a hollow grind and a wedge. That kind of rust would kill any razor.

A little pitting 1/8 up from the edge wont kill a wedge where as on a hollow ground its doomed. On a wedge there is enough "meat" to still find some clean metal underneath.

But no, right at the cutting edge there is little difference, perhaps a little more angle on a wedge
