What's new

Not sold on Da Fat yet....

I had a pretty bad shave tonight with MWF. My face felt dry, I felt like I was dry shaving. I even used a hot towel, hot water, pre shave oil. This stuff smelled nice, but shaved like crap.

I'll give it one more go in a few days, but so far I'm not a fan.

Give it more than just one more go. MWF is difficult to obtain a good lather but once you figure it out its by far one of the very best. How are you doing it?

I loaded it in my brush, swirled it around in my mug and added a tiny bit of a water., mixed it up, pushed the foam down and did it some more.

The winter kills me every year due to the dryness of the desert. MWF is always a pain for me but it leaves my face soft and supple. Lather may not look pretty but I look for more of the after effects.

Try face lathering, it's how I use it now.

sounds like you were nearly there but it was on the dry side. The lather from my DRH Arlington was dry this morning and I had an average shave, its a fantastic soap and I take all the blame for the dry lather.

You should try again with a bit more water in the mix.

OK. I will give it a few more tries. I'll try again in the morning since my shave sucked so bad.

Don't be afraid to use a little more water than normal. It is a different consistency than most and can be confused and too much water as I was doing for a while.

When I'm building a lather, I don't really worry about how much water is needed as it relates to other soaps or the same soap on another day. I look more at the consistency of the lather and add water and work the lather until it looks "right". Just keep working it until it gets there. It's really a fine product. Good luck!

Is it common for it to need more water than say Tabac?

IMO, yes, MWF needs more water. This is what I do and its successful for me. Soak my brush, give it squeeze and a flick or two. Start working the puck. This is how I normally load a brush, the variation with the MWF is dip the tips in water now and go back to the puck. This should create a dense creamy paste. I then build on my face typically using more water than my other soaps demand.

I've had my puck of MWF for about 2 years. I liked it, but didn't love it. The lather was never "bad" really, just never "great". I got a Rooney 1/1 in Super this year for Christmas and gave it a swirl in MWF a couple of days ago. Wow, it was like a different soap! The lather was instantly top notch! From what others have suggested, I'm going to say that the main difference from getting a good enough lather and getting an outstanding lather is that the Rooney holds more water than any other two brushes I own. I'm happy that the lather has improved because it is a favorite soap in the winter because it never dries my face. Now, though, I went from thinking I probably wouldn't replace the puck once it's gone (likely the end of the month) to really "NEEDING" a new puck in it's own dish:001_rolle

Practice lather. There is value to it. Don't just whip up lather and shave with it. Try a couple of practice runs at night. Yes, you'll be using product but once everything clicks it will be worth it for you.

Interesting thing about MWF. It almost seem that that is the one soap I've come accross where the water itself had something to do with the lather's performance...

A year or two ago I picked up a puck and couldn't get a decent lather out of it at all. A friend of mine here in Austin also had the same issue with his puck, so I know it wasn't a one off bad puck or something.

I gave up and just wrote it off as a soap that wouldn't work for me. Several months ago I spent a few days in NY with a friend of mine that is a dedicated MWF user and figured I'd give it a shot there. I was amazed at the lather and shave that I got from the stuff! Made me wonder if my hard water back here in Texas had something to do with the lather performance.

Earlier this month I had a Culligan water softener installed and decided to buy a new puck of MWF to give it another shot and the difference has been night and day. Needless to say, it's been my go to soap ever since.

It is pretty bold to put all the blame on MWF for your crappy shave. To each his own, of course, but I think that if you look around the site, you will find that MWF is universally loved by evryone that has figured it out. For some guys it takes some effort to find just the right formula for getting it to work, and for others it comes naturally but, IMHO, it is one of the 3 or 4 best soaps available on the planet (there's a reason why it has been around for over 100 years) and, therefore, worth every minute you spend figuring out just what you need to do to make it work for you.

Enjoy!

Try rubbing the soap directly onto your face like a stick, instead of loading the brush. By building the lather on your face and adding water as you go, you can better modulate the right amount of water to get the right density and slickness of lather. Also makes it easier to be sure that you're using enough soap. I get excellent results from MWF and others this way.

I have only face lathered MWF and have never had a problem with it. It has always produced a fine lather from the very first time that I used it.
