What's new

NOOOO! I broke my NEW

I just got my Gillette NEW long comb bar handle about a week ago. It cleaned up fine but one if the outside corner teeth was bent. I thought I could be gentle and coax it back straight. It broke off completely :scared:. Has anyone tried to solder one of these bad boys back on? Any ideas how to fix it? If I can't get it fixed I'll have to buy another but don't really want to do that if I don't have too.

There is a post on here somewhere showing someone soldering a tooth back into place. I couldn't do it, I would take it to a jeweler. They would have no problem, but not sure of the cost.

Thanks, I found the post. I think he fixed an old type or something similar but that's what I'm going to try. I Need to get some of those helping hand clamp things but I've been planning on getting those anyway. I'll also need to source a small torch (possibly the lighter variation) to make it happen. I already tried my 40watt iron and I just couldn't get the comb head hot enough to tin up. Oh yeah, JB weld is a no go as well... I'm a machinist and welder by trade but things of this small a scale elude me. I don't want to screw it up any worse than I already have so I guess that rules out Oxy torch .

A broken tooth does not render the razor unusable. I should still work fine. Unless you were planning to replate the razor, I would recommend using it as is. It may even work better than with the bent tooth.

NEWs are cheap enough that it's probably not worth the headaches. I took my New Improved to a jeweler who specializes in repairs to fix a bent tooth and he broke it off. Those teeth are fairly brittle.

I know a welder who is a dentist on the side...:biggrin1:
or is he a dentist who welds on the side? aw heck I forgot.

I was planning to have it replated eventually. I was thinking the black chrome or black nickle would be sweet, not original but vintage with a new twist. I'm still going to use it for the time being but I'll probably start the search for another one anyway. I wonder if the solder does work, can it still be plated over that?

They are made out of brass. Could you try brazing?

The problem with that is I would have to get it to a temp where brass (the brazing rod and the razor) melts. That could and most likely would be disasterous. Maybe silver solder, but I have to check the temps on that as well. I don't want to get anywhere near melting the razor.

That stinks. Like you I want my tools / razors in as good a shape as possible... and just out of principle I would ne trying to fix it too.

You always learn valuable lessons from projects like these.

Good luck. Let us know how it works out.

I believe he bent (and subsequently broke) a corner tooth. That's fatal if the corner of the blade is exposed.

You are correct, however, that a single inside tooth broken is generally not the end of the razor's life.

NEWs are fairly common particularly if it's in need of replating condition so it might be cheaper and easier all around to try for another one.
Brass is very tricky to weld or solder since it won't glow when hot,it's one piece then 20 seconds later it's two pieces.
