What's new

NOCvember 2023 - No Open Combs in November. Only teeth allowed are those we see when you smile!!

Plastic, but I dont mind. It really is great.
If I am being honest I would have preffered the 89 handle or a birth year razor, because they have the cross patterned handle. But couldn't resist this bargain.
The 84 is indeed harder to come by. I thought the 109 BB had the diamond pattern? Mine is more vertical lines at least.

Irrespective: great piece of shaving history!

Last night’s stupendous shave
@SlimGem Travel Raptor
Personna GEM PTFE (3)
Damp facecloth aka “shave binky”
AP ShaveCo Beehive Titanium UHD 28mm synthetic brush
Pre-shave: shea butter oil several hours earlier then Al’s new (old) lathering method
Lather: Wickham’s 1912 Club Cola bowl-loaded, face-lathered
Post shave warm shower
Post shave: mentholated Equate moisturizer

It was a mostly comfy shave. It was a close shave. It was a slow shave. I do believe my ham-handedness killed the blade. Thankfully, the razor didn’t let it kill me back. When I’m killing a 4-18¢ blade in a couple of shaves, I don’t mind, but this requires re-education on my part. Some other time. Keeping blade loaded in case it’s still squeakin’ sharp and a slight technique tweak brings it back. First two shaves were also slow, but amazingly comfortable for how close they were.

They quit making the 84's after 1975. The 109 with plastic bases started in 1977. My understanding is from 1977-79 they kept the vertical knurling. In 1980 they changed mostly to diamond knurling, but some were still made with vertical knurling in 1980 and 81. I have a 1980 with vertical knurling, it was harder to find. 1982-1988 were all 109 diamond knurling. I love the super adjustables, they all shave great imo. I have a 1985 with diamond knurling, it seems lighter than the rest.

Yaqi Ultima / Voshkod
YaqiUltimaNOC.jpg

The Yaqi Ultima is the stainless steel version of "The Final Cut", which again is very much a copy of the "Gibbs" razor that also inspired the Rex Ambassador.

I never got along that well with my Rex Envoy (I had really trouble to get a great shave, and often felt the blade too much, which I usually like. Very confusing!), supposedly roughly an Ambassador at setting 3, but it simply has different characteristics than the Ultima, which again is probably not really similar to the Ambassador, despite the same heritage and similar design elements. Razors are so hard to predict.

I simply never got the hang of how to use adjustable razors. So, no matter if I crank them up or down, they feel different then for sure, but the general character of the razor remains always the same.

Despite its rather small size (or maybe just because of that), the razor feels very head in the hand. Fans of light razors should rather try the zamac version. Around the same time I got the Harlequin and the Mellon, both worked out much better for me.

NOCvember - Closed Comb kick off

As basic a shave as possible with a gorgeous artisan razor from the land of Homer and Sophocles. It helps that this beauty belongs to @flask28 so I can stay basic and cheap.

A penny or two of Rapira PL blade use and a dab of Proraso green, splurge on a trickle of extremely hot tap water. No brush, just rubbed in well.

There is a lot of bronze in the Athena. And plenty of intricate detailing in the machining and polishing.

The blade-bending, superbly clamped head works quite well for me, but the 95mm/3.75" of handle is too much for a man of my habits.

To go N-S on my neck I really craned to the maximum. I should have been bare-chested as well to get the collar and shirt out of the way.

Combs don't get any more closed than the Athena's.

I am thinking Kai blade and a shorter handle for my next date with this goddess.

Oh! Thanks for the summons! I'm signing up under the wire - sorry! But I haven't had a November shave yet so I haven't violated the even terms yet

NOCvember shave number three.

NOCvember shave number three this morning. Still using my delightful Gillette Flat Bottom Tech and a Gillette 7 O’clock Yellow. A very nice shave this morning using Nivea Blue Cream and some thing a little different for as me an Aftershave Balm/Lotion. I tried some Nivea Facial Toner that I bought on clearance quite a while ago. It actually worked really well.

Green Cult 1.0
Rapira Swedish Supersteel

One of my favorites razors, since it was mentioned a few times it had to be used. @Beto Salatini not sure if you preferred this or the 2.0, but both are fantastic for me. 🍻

Thank you very much for the mention and congratulations on the splendid photo, dear friend. Unfortunately, I've never tried Greencult 1.0, but I imagine it to be fantastic. The GC 2.0 has been the razor I've used most frequently in recent months, except for the last month due to OCtober 2023. I really want to use it soon.

Cheers!

NOCvember shave 2 - Frankathena

Seems like Frankathena should tower over Athena, but this is a cut down RazoRock Ti Halo handle. More suited to scurrying around the hills, valleys, and crop circles on my neck.
