Spalting is a fungus in wood that discolors it. Or something like that. It’s a fungus discoloration. So spalted maple is not necessarily a species. It’s simply Maple that is spalted

Where did you get it from? Sometimes the blocks like that are sold pre-treated to some degree. Like for knife handles. Which makes them really hard. Sometime they can be sealed and look very similar to un-sealed woods.

It could be spalted tamarind too. They do look similar. Either way I’m sure it’s spalted something :letterk1:
Most the tamarind imported to the US is spalted. Very uncommon for it not to be.
