What's new

No Huge Revelation But...

I'm pretty sure that if one were to luck up classic no $h!+ manly aftershave in the dictionary they would see the following picture:

Sorry but this is one of those never be without it pieces of shaving gear, if you haven't tried it do yourself a favor. I recommend the real stuff and not the store brand knock offs, the difference will amaze you.

I can't believe how much I love this stuff. If every other aftershave in the world would disappear, I could live with just this.

The most well rounded and effective aftershave I have tried and so easy to find and cheap. What's not to like?

And to think I stared at a bottle of this in the store the other night...for like 3 mins.

Kept thinking: "Man..I've got enough shave crap..."

Looks like I'm getting some more.

Thanks...oh...and I have Ogallala and a crapload of samples on the way already!!!

I've never actually used it. I've dabbed a bit on my wrist from a bottle at the drug store a few times, and the scent always turned me off. I guess I'm a freak. :confused1

In the immortal words of the B-52s, from Dance This Mess Around:
Do the Coo-ca-choo
Do the Aqua-velva
Do the Dirty Dog
Do the Escalator

Ah-Hippy Hippy forward Hippy Hippy
Hippy Shake, Hippy Shake

It's time to do 'em right
Hey! Fred, now don't that make you feel a whole lot better now?
Huh?

Say, don't that make you feel a whole lot better?

I don't consider myself old, matter of fact someone on this forum called me a youngster, (by the way thanks) but I've never tried this. Thinking I will now.

Try a small bottle, see how it smells on ya once it's dry. Hell, it don't cost that much. I've had a couple of nurses I work with ask me what I'm wearing, and they didn't believe me when I said it was AV. One then accused me of having "weird body chemistry" since there was "no way it could be Aqua Velva"!

Thanks to this place, I am now a regular AV user. Almost every other day, I splash on the AV. Another product with awesome price to performance ratio!

If anyone uses Floris EDT (No. 89, Vetiver or Elite), I've found that AV Ice Blue blends seamlessly with those scents.. as the AV fades through the morning, the Floris takes over. Great combos.

While I don't love the smell of AV (it is okay) it absolutely is the perfect aftershave in every other way. Not to mention it is dirt cheap when compared to aftershaves of equal efficacy.

I think AV is one of those aftershaves I could have loved except for the fact that it is what my father has used his whole life and I associate the smell with him. From my earliest memories that 'smell' means 'dad.' I just can't use it, to me it would be like putting on his scent.

I found this interesting factoid about AV at Wiki:
Aqua Velva is a line of men's grooming products, including a widely advertised aftershave originally introduced as an alcohol-based mouthwash for men in 1929.

The alcohol content of original Aqua Velva was high enough to actually inspire US sailors in World War II to use it as a substitute for alcoholic beverages. Aqua Velva contains a bittering agent, denatonium benzoate, to discourage consumption.

Wow!

Actually, because of the alcohol content I don't think I could use it anyway. I tend to be sensitive to that sort of thing, and stick to milks and organic-based balms with little to no smell.

I like the smell, but it only lasts about 5 minutes.

I do, however, love the cooling effect.

A proraso shave, followed by a cold water splash, then a generous slathering of AV=:velva2:
I need to buy myself some Menthol crystals, and see how cold I can get it.
