What's new

njpaddy's new pipe

I should know better than to surf B&B after midnight with a glass of gin in my hand. This is result of one of those evenings this past week. I haven't smoked since the 70's but have thought about trying a pipe off and on and after reading some threads decided to give it a go. I thought about going the cheap route and initially looked at a $6 MM and a $30 Grabow yesterday at Walgreen's. I walked out because I had second thoughts about buying one off an old rack hidden behind a counter and because I couldn't get anyone to help me. I decided to check out a smoke store today and walked out with this beauty. Once I held it I was hooked. I bought 2 tobacco's, a store blend of light & dark Cavendish and one called Maraschino, a "bite free mixture of Burley, Virginia and Black Cavendish". First use will be later today after a nice shave.

Nice Pete.
Peterson! Great start down a slippery slope. Enjoy the ride!
Nonsense- we are a safe group who would never think of feeding ADs.

Or not.

So I had my first bowl with the Cavendish blend and enjoyed it. I liked the pipe and the P/Lip. I had never seen a P/Lip before today. I only had trouble keeping it lit for about the first third of the bowl. No problems after that. I'll have to work on that top third. I also enjoyed taking it slow, letting it sit and restarting, and it probably took 1+ hrs to finish the bowl. My wife didn't complain and the room smoke alarm didn't go off - 2 more positives.

I do have 2 questions:

1. I've heard it said to wait 12 hours between bowls, I guess to let it dry, but how long can you let it sit with the same tobacco in the bowl? Can I smoke half, then let it sit for several hours before I finish it? Is there an "unofficial" amount of time after which I should just dump the bowl and start fresh?

2. Do I need to burn it down to the bottom (for cake)? Would it matter if most of the time I only smoked 1/2 or 3/4 and dumped the rest? I could try only loading half way if that's better.

Nice. Petersons are great pipes and you should thoroughly enjoy it.

My biggest regret since I started pipe smoking was not getting a Peterson sooner.

Being fairly new myself, take anything I say in that context, but I often let a pipe sit partially smoked for a few hours and pick it back up again. I can't say I've noticed any ill effects on the pipe by doing so.

On the cake question, the most common advice I've seen is don't worry about it. Sip the pipe, enjoy it at half full, all full, whatever... the cake will happen.
