Nivea ASB, what is it good for? NOT MUCH

I've always used Nivea Sensitive ASB "Extra Soothing". I thought I have a good product. It tend to feel "moisturizing".

Now that I have started DE shaving, and sometime shaving ATG, I get the razor burn for about 15 min and my face feels warm for about 2 hours. That is USING the Nivea.

Today, I had some free time after work, and since my morning shave was very rushed, I thought I go for a BBS shave. (this is 9 hr. after the morning shave).

I did my 30min. ritual and I know I've over done it, running the razor like an addicted maniac. but I did managed to get the best shave so far.

I know I was going to pay the price of razor burn, and sure enough, it started to hurt after the cold towel and the ASB. Meantime, I had to leave the house to go somewhere.

While driving, it started to hurt more and more, to the point I actually stopped at a Walgreen to go find a bottle of Aqua Velvet, the only other AS I know and have read some positive comments here.

Too bad, they didn't carry Aqua Velvet, but the cosmetic lady said the Walgreen brand is "just like it". I gave her the "nah" look, and she said "try it". My face was burning so bad I didn't care, I needed something.... You guessed it! it INSTANTLY relieved my burn (after the strong alcohol sting, mind you).

I grabbed the bottle and paid the cashier... it saved my face.

Now I'm back infront of the computer, wondering why I even use the Nivea. But then I thought about the strong cologne scent of the Walgreen AV. I really don't care for that either.

Soooo, what are some product you can recommend that dose the job of AV without the strong scent?

and where do witch hazel come it? I have read a post somewhere that suggest using it (forgot the order..)

Sorry to be such a newb...

Sounds more like you have a blade angle problem.

Witch hazel is the first thing I put on after the cold water.

But if your face is that bad you really should check the angle next time. Make sure your not scrapping that layer of skin off.

Nivea is the best :thumbup1:

Too bad it dosn`t work for you though :001_unsur

+1 Nivea is well liked on here by many experienced DE users...sounds like technique may be more of the problem.

The best aftershave or balm in the world wont "cure" bad razorburn...only time and letting the face heal!

Best of luck to you Sir in your future shaves. I hope you find a routine that works for you :001_smile

It is the only post shave blam I have used so far, I agree it doesn't help that much with razor burn, but it smells nice and isn't too powerful.

I personally don't like it either - leaves me with a lasting burning sensation. I am sure that my technique could use some improving though.

Interesting that Nivea doesn't work for you; it is part of my daily routine and I am getting my best shaves, with no irritation, ever. I was using the same Nivea and getting neck irritation until my technique improved - so I believe it was more about my own inconsistency versus the ASB.

From reading the comments, Nivea seemed to get rid of the burning sensation for most of you. I am just reporting that it didn't for me. In fact, until I tried the off-brand Aqua Velvet, I didn't know there's something that can take my burning away immediately, up to 90%.

I am sure my technique needs refinement. I probably shouldn't have razor burn in the first place.

thanks for the inputs. I still got a way to go to reach DE nirvana!

I find the Nivea OK but my No.1 go to AS is the Proraso liquid cream AS without the alcohol. The white, milky one. It is the BUSINESS! Give that a go.

I am fairly new, so my blade angle isn't great and get lazy some times. I get burn. Proraso Pre/Post soothes that burn better than anything I've used. The other day, had bad burn after applying some skin food - a few minutes later, after feeling the heat, I applied some proraso pre/post - it feels like icy-hot at first, but after a minute....the burn was gone, great stuff. Only problem is the vicks vapo-rub like smell - it goes away rather quickly, but I try to avoid using it unless I need the relief...because of the mentholy smell.

I didn't think the Nivea balm worked well either. Honestly, though, it sounds like the part of AV you are liking is the menthol, I'd suggest anything with lots of menthol, like Barbasol Pacific Rush (very little scent). Other than that, all I can tell you is to shop around and see what you like.

As far as witch hazel goes, I use it in my preshave prep right before I apply my lather, and I'll often use it as an aftershave. Some folks use it before they apply their alcohol AS, or even mix it in to make a less intense splash.

The Nivea ASB works for me, but then some soaps that others swear by set me off - maybe it's a skin thing?

Personally, the Nivea is a good barometer on the quality of my shave. Most days it goes on with no fuss. However, I was swapping around on other soaps and blades and a couple of times I have slathered on the ASB as per normal and almost had my eyes pop out my head with shock from the burn.

For me, if the Nivea burns then my shave just screwed the pooch.

I use the Nivea ASB, to great effect. I noticed you mentioned something about having serious irritation on your neck. In my opinion, as I'm not there to watch you make the lather, it sounds like you need your lather to be far more slick. Try adding a few drops of glycerine to the mix. Nivea ASB is all I need, unless I completely massacre my face, which happens every so often.

Best of luck to you either way.

again, thank you to all who posted, it just reads like I managed to massacred my face so bad the Nivea could not rescue me.

I did this early on, too. I had used only Nivea prior to my wet shaving days, and at first when I started wet shaving figured it was actually crap. Now that my technique has improved, I continue to use only Nivea products, and enjoy each of them, as I have all of them in my den.

Great products, but no, they will not rescue us from our own impatience and mistakes, which I do make now and again. Keep at it though, and I think you will come to enjoy them for what they are.

My dad has been using Nivea only since it came out. He hates the burn of alcohol aftershaves. I used Nivea when I lived at home because it was there. It was nice and made my skin feel moist, but I was never happy with the burn it left. My face still felt hot.
