What's new

Next Soap recommendation.

I have been wet shaving for about a year now. I have been using prorasso green soap for a while now, and looking to get something new and different. There is so many options of soaps out there and I dont know where to begin. The very first time I started wet shaving I was using Real Shaving Co. cream. I found the smell of that cream horrible. I do not want a soap that smells anything like that, but something that smells nice.

I have inherited an old spice mug, which I can use for a puck. at this point I really dont want to invest in another shaving mug, so something that would fit into my oldspice mug would be ideal. Also I am using a simpsons best badger brush, and recently I have been enjoying face lathering.

Any recommendations for my second shaving soap? preferably something that smells nice, and lathers easy too.

Oh the possibilities. Well, my first thought is to get a soap that performs great and also has a great scent.... yet is different than Proraso. Proraso is great by the way IMO. If I were you I would pick a soap based on that criteria rather than something that will fit in your mug. You can always grate a larger puck if it's hard or smash a soft soap in your OS mug. I'd go with D.R. Harris Arlington. It's a nice lemony woody scent.... very different than Proraso. Another great soap IMO is I Coloniali cream/soap with mango oil. It's kind of a hard cream. You could get a refill of that and I'm pretty sure it would fit nicely in your OS mug. Again, great scent that is very different from Proraso. Kind of a smokey, fruity scent.... maybe a little better suited for this time of year. Tabac is another that's a great performer, but the scent can be a bit hit or miss.... and then there's Mitchell's Wool Fat where the scent is fairly well embraced but many guys have trouble lathering. Both of those are sold as refills as well.

I would try a glycerin based soap, like Col Conks, and makes sure to follow the directions in this thread to lather properly: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/439-Glycerin-Soap-Tutorial-Part-2

They have a few different scents, I have the Amber and Bay Rum. Bay Rum is lightly scented,Amber a little more potent, but not overpowering. The nice thing about glycerin soaps is you can microwave them for 10 seconds or so and pour it in your mug. Don't try this with other types of soap, though, I've read it can be disastrous!

good luck!

I'd consider one of the artisan soapmakers. Queen Charlotte, Mike's Natural, & Mystic Waters are three that I've tried and can recommend. All are great soaps full of tallowy goodness, are very reasonably priced, and come in a wide variety of scents so you can find exactly the right one for your nose.

It helps to know that you don't like the scent of Real Shaving Co. cream but "something that smells nice" is meaningless. What scents do you like? Keep in mind that scent is highly subjective/YMMV. If we all had the same notion of scent then the "bad smelling" options would have gone out of business long ago.

Read up in this subforum. Look at what's popular. See if anything stands out as interesting to you. Any soap that you haven't tried is worth trying as you don't if it will work for you or not without first hand experience.

Any size soap puck will fit in an OS mug, you just have to try different products until you find what you like, no one can decide that for you. Also, you don't have to use mugs to store soap in. Cheap Ziploc type plastic containers work great, they don't break if dropped and stack easily under the sink or in a closet.

D.R. Harrison Arlington is a good choice. Along the same lines, I also would consider TOBS Jermyn St.

On my short list of soaps I want to try:
Queen Charlotte Soaps
MWF

Mama Bear has mug size pucks now!
The best scented non tallow soap in the universe.

I just received a couple Mama Bear's soaps in the mail today...Sandalwood Vanilla, which I think is an awesome, classic, almost barbershop type scent and Cedarwood, which is just scented with 100% natural cedarwood essential oil. Both are awesome!
