What's new

Next razor recommendation please-- slant or futur?

It's only been a month since I started wet shaving. My first tries were difficult-- lots of irritation, swearing, and poor lather. I'm happy to say that I've come a long way in a short period of time, and consistently have "perfect" shaves, as in, minutes after I rinse my face, I feel as if I didn't shave at all. I haven't seen a red patch in weeks!

My Merkur 23c has become a close friend in this very short period, but I can't help but feel that I'm almost ready for a more aggressive razor. My 4 pass mornings are nice, but trimming that down to a 2 pass + touch up system is a more realistic long term goal.

Having said that, I've done a lot of research-- the Futur sounds right up my alley, but the comments about the somewhat annoying blade change system and bulky head are concerning. As I don't see myself needing to adjust the razor very often, the 39c slant sounds like a good option. Any opinions?

As I did not bother to introduce myself when I first began, than you for this community!

Many people like the Futur despite the fact it has a large blade gap and is considered more aggressive in shaving as a result. It's main advantage is that the Futur can adjust to accommodate differing blades. However, the advantage of a slant razor is that it cuts hairs at a angle in a slicing action, not a chopping action. In theory, this means the hairs are cut easier and more efficiently.

I prefer the slant razor of the Futur because the head of slant is smaller than the Futur's, permitting easier access to tough to reach areas. I also believe in the theory of the slant's angled razor edge allowing easier cutting. FYI, I use a Merkur 39C razor, which as a longer handle than the 37C.

I use a Futur in my rotation.
It is an agressive razor that's for sure. It is also very heavy, which means you don't need to put any pressure on it. The weight of the razor is enough.
I've never had a problem changing blades, I just hold the head with my towel and pop it off. Yes you have to be careful, but it's not as tricky as it sounds.
Just for reference, I use Feather blades dialed in to 2 maybe 2.5

Also, as a side note, maybe try them both. If you're not satisfied, you can sell them on the BST forum.
Just beware of RAD (or embrace it, whatever you like)

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards a slant but the Futur looks damn cool, not that it really matters ;)

I was exactly where you are now a couple of days ago, until I found myself thinking, well, whatever one I buy, I will always be thinking "what if the other one was better?!..." and knowing myself I knew I would end up buying the other one sooner or latter (probably sooner..), as such, I decided to purchase both.... spared me some grief and future postage costs...

Ask yourself that very same question, If your a bit like me and many here (from what I've witnessed), then the answer is both. :D

I have the Futur, never tried a slant. I would get the Futur just because of the ability to finr tune your shave. That being said I wish I had a Vision...

Futur is one mighty beast. It will give you the closest shave out of most DE's, but lose your attention for half a second and it could scar you for life.

The only Merkur I've ever used was a 39C, and that was tonight. It was not intimidating like some say, but you an feel a good bit of blade, which I like. I thought the Slant had some good potential. I'll keep using it a dozen or so times before I make a final decision, but from my limited experience, I'd say it's a keeper.

I got my Sledgehammer Saturday and its by far the best shaver I've got, I haven't tried a Futur yet but it would have to go some to beat the 39C, I get BBS every time :001_tt1:.
