What's new

next buy

right now i have a merkur 38c HD long handle barber pole. It shaves well. I can get a DFS with little to no effort. with a bit more time put in i can get almost BBS (save for one spot that i always seem to forget) every time and fairly often a BBS.

i like the long handle because i have crazy big hands.

i want something a bit more aggressive
since i like the 38c i think i want to stick to merkur (i tried a Gillette NEW and i dont care for it much)
ive narrowed it down to two:

1) Merkur 39C HD Long Handle Barber Pole Safety Razor, Slant Bar

B) Merkur Progress Long Handle Adjustable Safety Razor

are there advantages/disadvantages to either?

the blades i tend to like are the Gillette 7 o'clock sharp edge (yellow pack ) and Feather.

I like milder razors and I think Progress belongs to them. Mantic told about liking Weishi that is really mild I have read, so perhaps Progress not for you.
You can open progress to a huge gap, but I think it was designed to be a mild razor. Adjustibles I think have their optimum gap, changes from user to user.
I think you can shave yourself pretty babe butt with that 38C you have, it is just a technique thing.

Merkur slants have a big fan club on this forum. Adjustables, of course, have adjustability in their favor.

Some find the slant too agressive for everyday use. Others love them to pieces.

There have been some issues regarding tolerances and manufacturing defects lately with the Progresses, so you'd want to be sure to use a responsive vendor and examine the item closely upon receipt.

Some people complain that the Progress' handle is slippery, as it lacks the texturing that most other razors have.
