What's new

Newish Commodore X3 has more backbone than Duke 3?

I was test lathering my Commodore X3, which I've used maybe 5 times now, and I was surprised by how much backbone/scrub I got when face lathering. It had a great controlled feel, and didn't splay out too much on my face. I was pretty surprised, since I was on vacation last week and used my Duke 3 exclusively.

I bought my Duke 3 used, and afaik it's been used about 25-30 times, and generally has been like a huge pillow on the face. It has a pretty large splay, especially when wet, but doesn't give me the same scrubby satisfaction as my 2-bands.

Is the perceived increased backbone of my Commodore just because it is still new? I have a SR 3824 that I also bought new, and have only used about 5 times as well, and the Commodore felt denser/stiffer, yet still soft.

I've had a couple Duke 3 brushes and I would not say that any of them were pillow like. In fact I have always sold them because I thought they were too compact/dense

I had a Commodore X2 that had the most backbone of any brush I have ever had until I got a Shavemac do1 two band. That little X2 was very scrubby and extremely dense. Always figured I got an outlier.

About Simpson brushes, I found that they have very different behaviour depending on the knot they have, and usually the same model have different knot sizes (you can check them for example in thesuperiorshave shop where they measure individually each Simpson brush and they found always differences between them)

For example, I had two Duke3 brushes: the first one was too dense and firm for facelathering (too short knot I think). The second one in the opposite side was much softer and splayed a lot. The reason as you can imagine: different knot sizes.

So would be useful to know which knot size have your Commodore

Cheers!
